Seismic attributes

Artificial neural network (ANN) has been widely applied in oil and gas exploration and production. This study presents the results of predicting the distribution of Late Oligocene sandstones in the Cuu Long basin based on the application of ANN and seismic attributes.

Velocity model technique is routinely used to convert data from the time-to-depth domain to support prospect evaluation, reservoir modelling, well engineering, and further drilling operation. In Vietnam, the conventional velocity model building workflow oversimplifies the interval velocities as only well interval velocities are populated into 2D grids for depth conversion or oversimplified calibration interval velocities by applying a single scaling factor function.

A correlative maturity study integrated with seismic attributes for determining the shale gas potential of Ghazij Formation is carried out. Analysis of post-stack seismic attributes has been frequently used to identify areas of high exploration potential within shale resource plays. Seismic and well data have been utilized for the analysis of maturity trends in the shale facies of Ghazij Formation.

The dataset used in this study is the Maui 3D seismic volume from Taranaki basin, offshore New Zealand. A stack of 400 continuous stratigraphic horizons is produced from the Maui RGT model, even for complex areas where classical methods failed to achieve or would take a long time to complete. Integrated with seismic attribute mappings such as RMS amplitude and/or spectral decomposition, the horizon stack enables to navigate the seismic volume in stratigraphic order.

The integration of seismic attribute analysis and well log interpretation has further defined the fan-shaped distribution of these traps. Thus, using various methods, the stratigraphic traps can be better revealed. Further studies, however, need to be carried out to fully evaluate hydrocarbon potential of these stratigraphic/ combination traps, and minimize risks in exploration drilling.
