Seismic intensity

For this purpose, it has been attempted to determine new geological, seismological and environmental data by examining a large number of original sources, records and old international earthquake catalogs, other than the existing national catalogs used in seismicity studies in Turkey. In this context, a new local and updated historical earthquake catalog was prepared for İzmir and its immediate vicinity. The data obtained from the records show that the maximum intensity of some destructive historical earthquakes in the İzmir region was X.

The 2020 Samos, M7.0 earthquake was characterized by an unusual bi-modal-type distribution of damage: limited damage in the nearfield (especially northern Samos coast) and serious localized damage in multi-story buildings in the far field (İzmir area). This pattern is not consistent with the typical distribution of isoseismal lines, and it seems not to represent an isolated effect; the 2014 Samothraki- Gökçeada M6.9 earthquake, for example, may in fact represent a parallel, though at smaller scale.

In this study, inelastic time history of 3-storey frames is performed for three seismic intensities and the interstorey drifts are obtained. Damage distribution in the frames based on inter-storey drifts is then evaluated in comparison with the experimental and analytical damage.

Results of our survey of the area around Song Tranh 2 (December 2012) have shown that recently, the earthquakes occur frequently and caused minor damage on some houses. While the houses had cracks in the walls, but the columns did not experience any damage. The damage is consistent with the shaking of the intensity in the range of VI - VII (MSK scale).

In this paper, seismic activity characteristics in the East Sea area was analyzed by authors on the base of the unified earthquake catalog (1900-2017), including 131505 events with magnitude 3 ≤ Mw ≤ 8.4. The seismic intensity in the East Sea during the period 1900 - 2017 is characterized by the earthquake representative level Mw = 4.7. The strong earthquake activity in the East Sea area clearly shows the regularity in each stage.
