Seismic loading has always been a major concern for any engineering structures, and thereby, underground facilities (e.g., tunnels) are not exceptional. It is due to the seismically induced uplift and instability of tunnels caused by the large deformation of liquefiable soils. Therefore, the tunnel uplift behaviors subjected to seismic loading are always taken into account in any designing stages of tunnels.

Tunnels are an important component of the transportation and utility system of cities. They are being constructed at an increasing rate to facilitate the need for space expansion in densely populated urban areas and mega-cities. This paper is devoted to highlight the differences between the behavior of the subrectangular tunnels compared with the circular ones subjected to quasistatic loadings.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the seismic behavior of square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. Finite element analysis (FEA) models in ABAQUS software were used to simulate a series of columns subjected to axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. The CFST columns were simulated using nonlinear tri-dimensional (3-D) finite elements for the infilled concrete, and nonlinear two-dimensional (2-D) finite elements for the steel tube.

This paper predicts the displacement of the diaphragm walls in deep excavations of Hk = 12m in Hanoi accounting for seismic loading. The walls are stably sustained using soil nail systems, struts, and top-down method. A finite element analysis software, PLAXIS 2D, is utilized to model the systems.

In this paper, various frames with their spans of 20, 26, 32 and 38 m and locations built in Hanoi and Son La regions were designed to resist dead, roof live, crane and wind loads. The equivalent horizontal and vertical static earthquake loads applied on the frames were determined.

In this study, inelastic time history of 3-storey frames is performed for three seismic intensities and the interstorey drifts are obtained. Damage distribution in the frames based on inter-storey drifts is then evaluated in comparison with the experimental and analytical damage.

The paper focuses on the shaking test program, including materials, similitude law and scaled model, instruments, seismic waves and loading program. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding on the process of shake table test is revealed thanks to the results of an investigation on a precast frame structure made of recycled aggregate concrete.

Reactor internals are sensitive to dynamic loads such as earthquakes and flow induced vibration. Thus, it is essential to identify the dynamic characteristics to evaluate the seismic integrity of the structures. However, a full-sized system is too large to perform modal experiments, making it difficult to extract data on its modal characteristics. In this research, we constructed a finite element model of the APR1400 reactor internals to identify their modal characteristics.

An aircraft impact (AI) on a nuclear power plant (NPP) is considered to be a beyond-design-basis event that draws considerable attention in the nuclear field. As some NPPs have already adopted the seismic isolation technology, and there are relevant standards to guide the application of this technology in future NPPs, a new challenge is that nuclear power engineers have to determine a reasonable method for performing AI analysis of base-isolated NPPs.

Beam-column joints play an important role, affecting the earthquake response of reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Their behavior is influenced by the way in which they damage the beams, columns and the complex interaction between the shear, bonding and confined mechanisms in a limited zone.

This paper addresses the strength and deformation capacity of slender columns retrofitted by externally bonded Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) subjected to seismic loading. The behaviour of RC columns depending on the CFRP confinement (carbon CFRP jacket) and on flexural reinforcement (carbon plates) was analysed by a nonlinear finite element method based on multilayer shell element and multifiber beams with plasticity and damage models.

In this research, the performance abilities associated with tube type lateral load resistant framed systems are studied in order to assess the seismic response parameters ofsteel tall buildings under both far and near-field records. For this purpose, four 30 story structural models with separated framed tube-based skeletons were selected and designed.
