This research is a follow-up of a more comprehensive PhD study on assessment of shale gas resources in the northern Song Hong basin that was conducted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The Song Hong basin, a typical pull-apart Cenozoic basin, had experienced a post-extensional stage accompanied by seafloor spreading from Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene with its stratigraphy characterised by a fault-controlled syn-rift continental sequence followed by a post-rift marine sequence.

North of İstanbul, the thick Upper Cretaceous volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of the Yemişliçay Group is nonconformably overlain by the neritic clastic and carbonate sequence of the Zekeriyaköy Formation. This unit, either placed within the volcanic sequence or interpreted to overlie it, was studied near Zekeriyaköy for its larger foraminifera, previously recurrently referred to as the Maastrichtian. The basal epiclastic sandstone beds of the Zekeriyaköy Formation immediately above the volcanic sequence contain Praesiderolites dordoniensis and rare rudist shells.

The South Central Coastal Quaternary sandy formation has been studied by many authors according to different objectives, mainly for establishing quaternary geological maps ata different scale. There are 5 sedimentary cycles established based on the absolute age of the sand, that was analyzed by the method of thermoluminescent dating of quartz, and by the comparison between 5 global glacial/interglacialcycles and 5 sedimentary cycles of the Red River Delta.

Rudists are common fossils in transgressive Upper Cretaceous deposits in three localities placed in northwestern part of Croatia. Their appearances coincide with the beginning of a transgressive sequence through floatstones-thickets. Within the rudist community, Vaccinites Fischer 1887, Hippurites Lamarck 1801 and Hippuritella Douvillé 1908 could be differentiated according to their general or generic morphological elements.

This study presents a detailed continental palaeoclimate record for the Neogene of Northwestern Europe. Palynomorph samples from continental to marginal marine deposits in 5 correlated sections from the Lower Rhine Basin (NW Germany) covering the time-span from Burdigalian to Zanclean are analysed. Independent time-control in the sections is provided by sequence stratigraphy

Palaeozoic rocks crop out across large areas in the İstanbul region. The Palaeozoic sequence starts with the Lower Ordovician fluviatile and lacustrine deposits (Kocatöngel and Kurtköy formations). The area was transgressed by the sea during the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian, represented by the feldspathic quartzwacke and quartz-arenites of the Kınalıada and Aydos formations.

Messinian forced regressions in the Adana Basin: A near-coincidence of tectonic and eustatic forcing
This sedimentological and sequence-stratigraphic study focuses on the late Miocene deposits in one of the largest periMediterranean basins of southern Turkey, the Adana Basin, which formed as a Tauride foreland depression accumulating molasse deposits. The Tortonian–Messinian shallow-marine Handere Formation, previously interpreted as a regressive succession, appears to have recorded several relative sea-level changes.

The Eocene marine sequence in the southern part of the Thrace Basin (NW Turkey) involves a variety of platform and deep-marine olistostromal units, the stratigraphy of which have been vigorously debated in the past. A detailed analysis of larger foraminifera in these either foraminifera or foraminifera-coral-coralline algae-dominated platform and associated comparatively deeper-marine units permits us to establish a high-resolution biostratigraphy in the context of shallow benthic zonation (with SBZ zones) of Tethyan Paleogene.

Outcrops of the Middle Eocene in northern Egypt represent a Tethyan reef-rimmed carbonate platform with bedded innerplatform facies. The diagenesis of these outcrops was studied in detail. The facies are characterized by a reef core, back reef and outer lagoon, shoal, inner lagoon, and tidal flat carbonate sequences.

The frontal belt of the southeastern Anatolia fold-thrust belt in Turkey contains several small to mid-size oilfields, producing from carbonate reservoirs of the Cretaceous Mardin group. Many of these fields are found along narrow, asymmetrical anticlinal structures, associated with the formation of the fold-thrust belt.

The Oligocene clastic sequence of the Mezardere Formation (MF) with laterally variable organic richness has long been known as a proven source of gas with minor oil accumulations across the Thrace Basin of northwest Turkey. However, based on well data for the thick MF, neither detailed work in relation to age dating and stratigraphy nor a close linkage between the depositional facies/ environments, organic richness/organic proxies, and cyclicity has been established yet.

The formation of these units and surfaces is related to the global sea-level change in Late Pleistocene-Holocene. SB1, defined as the sequence boundary, was generated by subaerial processes during the Late Pleistocene regression and could be remolded partially or significantly by transgressive ravinement processes subsequently.

Lithofacies association in time and space is characterized by three depositional system tract belonged to the upper part of a sequence stratigraphy. Based on lithology should be divided 5 sedimentary types and 18 lithofacies distributed in stratigraphical column and in sea bottom varying from 25m water depth to mainland coastal area. According to

The sequence stratigraphy units of the Quaternary sediments at the continental shelf of Vietnam have been compared with the lithofacies and depositional cycles in relation to sea level changes. During the regression phases corresponding to the lowstand systems tract has being formed the alluvial lithofacies, shelf deltaic complex and shelf edge fans complex. The maximum regression remarked by erosion boundaries has corresponded with the lowstand sea level characterized by the slope fan turbiditte complex.

In this, the second volume of the two-volume review of carbonates in continental settings, we continue our survey of the important aspects of their formation and utilisation.Whereas the first volume emphasised the formation of carbonate sediments, covering the depositional settings, facies and sedimentological processes; this second volume examines the geochemistry, diagenesis, sequence stratigraphy of these deposits, along with some of the practical applications. The geochemistry of continental carbonates is discussed in depth in Chapter 1.
