The content of this thesis presents the current status of shrimp farming development in Tra Vinh province over the past time; analyzing factors affecting shrimp farming development from research results; solutions to promote the development of shrimp farming in Tra Vinh province in the coming time.

In Mekong delta, mangrove forest distributes along the coastline of 700 km and it is a homeland for mud crab in tropical areas. The mud crab becomes potential to be alternative species from failed shrimp farming. Particularly, mud crab hatchery has been introduced and operated recently at Bac lieu, Tra vinh, Soc Trang, Ben Tre, Kien giang and Ca mau provinces. However, the survival from zoea stage to crablet stage 1 is low at approximately 5%. In addition, like shrimp rearing, the mud crab hatchery is using antibiotic as major treatment to prevent bacteria and fungi.

Bivalve culture such as clam production is a promising activity as it is more profitable despite a low production rate. However, clam culture has the disadvantage of mainly relying on capture of seed source from the wild. At the same time, due to disease outbreak in the prawn farming sector as a consequence of water deterioration, there has been an overall reduction in aquaculture production. Clam is recognized as a water cleaning machine(filter feeder), thus water quality will be improved if clam can be incorporated into the shrimp farming system.
