Cancer survivors are able to live much longer today than in the past due to advances in treatment. The promotion of health behaviors is important to address among cancer survivors. Not only can health behaviors reduce the risk of comorbidities, but they may also be key to improving psychological health among cancer survivors, such as psychological distress, perceptions of one’s general health, and distress of cancer mortality (i.e., cancer fatalism).

Hypoxia is a major concern and cause of morbidity or mortality during tracheal intubation after anesthesia induction in a pathological obese patient with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We introduce a case using Supraglottic jet oxygenation and ventilation (SJOV) to promote oxygenation/ventilation during fiberoptic intubation in a paralyzed patient with morbid obesity and OSA.

Dexmedetomidine promotes normal sleep architecture; the drug also improves analgesia. We there‑ fore tested the hypothesis that supplementing intravenous analgesia with dexmedetomidine reduces delirium in older patients recovering from orthopedic surgery.

To increase health and well-being in young children, it is important to acknowledge and promote the child’s sleep behaviour. However, there is a lack of brief, validated sleep screening instruments for children.

DNA transposon-based vectors are effective nonviral tools for gene therapy and genetic engineering of cells. However, promoter DNA methylation and a near-random integration profile, which can result in transgene integration into heterochromatin, renders such vectors vulnerable to transcriptional repression.

Sleep restriction is a prevalent issue for adolescents and has been associated with negative cognitive, emotional, and physical health (e.g., poor attention, depressed mood, obesity). Existing sleep promotion programs are successful in improving adolescents’ sleep knowledge but not sleep behaviour.

Behavioral arousal requires integration of multiple neurotransmitter and neuromodulatory systems. Identifying these systems is the key to not only a better understanding of the neurobiology of sleep⁄wakefulness but may also lead to the discovery of potential therapeutic targets for various sleep disorders.

When one thinks of illnesses and diseases that result from obesity, most people think of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. We refer to these as the big three. But the list is very long and includes: depression/social isolation, arthritis/back pain, pulmonary embolus (blood clots from the legs, thighs, to the lungs), gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, infertility in women, increased cancer risk in men and women, chronic lack of energy, etc. For over twenty years I have practiced medicine in New York City.

Although alcohol is a brain sedative and promotes sleep, it actually reduces the amount of quality rapid eye movement (REM) sleep which we need to be fully rested and increases slow wave sleep. Its sedative effect lessens as the night progresses, arousal from sleep and continued wakefulness being likely to occur when the blood alcohol concentration approaches zero. Like other people, the elderly may have recourse to alcohol and prescribed drugs to help them cope with stress, anxiety and depression.

Quality characteristics to look for in convertible sofas are a solid frame, thick steel in the frame, bed frame securely attached to sofa frame, and durable decking fabric. The wood provides the frame for the sofa and the steel provides the frame for the bed. The wood should be hardwood and the steel should be thick enough to support the movement in and out and the weight of people sleeping on the bed. The way the mechanical parts of the bed are attached to the wood determines how well the convertible unit stays together.

Countries should intensify efforts to measure and regularly monitor medicine prices and availability, and adopt policy measures to address the issues identified. A range of policy options are available to address issues of high prices and low availability of medicines. Low public sector availability can be addressed through improved procurement efficiency, and adequate, equitable and sustainable financing. Medicine prices can be reduced by eliminating duties and taxes on medicines and promoting the use of quality-assured generic medicines.

The chapters in this book reflect leading edge ideas, reflections and observations. Even though the modern era of sleep research evolved from Aserinksky’s observations of rapid eye movements in the sleep of babies, most work is nonetheless done in adults. There is much less formal work done in youngsters and virtually none in utero and pregnancy itself is virtually unexplored. So, Dr Miller et al’s chapter reviewing sleep in pregnancy is particularly welcome as it incorporates current thinking in how disordered sleep impacts other adult pathological processes.

Nonetheless, data is data, and whilst the interpretation may be suspect (which can happen with even the best controlled studies), the data is the most valuable asset in a research paper. Of course insight that either consolidates or furthers our understanding is vital, but without data it can be nothing more than an armchair idea. Many journals require the highest levels of scientific rigour, which may make some research inaccessible - really a form of scientific censorship.

Shift-Work Disorder: Treatment Caffeine is frequently used to promote wakefulness. However, it cannot forestall sleep indefinitely, and it does not shield users from sleep-related performance lapses. Postural changes, exercise, and strategic placement of nap opportunities can sometimes temporarily reduce the risk of fatigue-related performance lapses. Properly timed exposure to bright light can facilitate rapid adaptation to night-shift work. While many techniques (e.g.
