Slender grain

The present investigation was undertaken with 33 coloured and white rice genotypes to identify promising slender grain genotypes with high yield and good nutrition quality. The study involved seven red pericarp, eight black pericarp and 17 white rice genotypes, in addition to the check, BPT 5204.

A study was undertaken to identify maintainers and restorers for their utilization in development of aromatic rice hybrids. The rice variety Ratnagiri-8 (IET 25493; RTN 28-1-5-3-2) was evolved from the cross between IR64 and Karjat 184 using former parent as female through pedigree method of selection. The above variety is midlate in duration (135-138 days in Kharif), Semi-dwarf (102-110 cm plant height). Ratnagiri 8 rice variety recorded 38.52% higher grain yield over HYV’s medium slender check Palghar 1 pooled over five years testing in Station Trial.

India is among the topmost rice producers and consumers in the world. Rice crop is susceptible to various bacterial diseases and one such commonly known disease is Bacterial Blight (BB) caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and is known to severally impact rice crop yield. Rice variety HKR-47 is widely popular amongst rice farmers and consumers in Haryana because of its high yield, medium slender grains, and excellent cooking and eating qualities, however, HKR-47 exhibits less endurance to BB.

The present experiment was carried out using twenty-nine elite breeding lines from Station Yield Trial - Slender Grain materials along with three check varieties at the Rice Research Station, O.U.A.T., Bhubaneswar in kharif- 2016. A part of the research was to study the genetic divergence among the breeding lines used in the experiment. The D2 values obtained from the divergence study ranged from 3.36 between OR2675-6-4 and OR2676-2-5 to 2518 between OR2675-2-1 and Samba mahsuri.

The laboratory experiments were conducted in university lab entitled “Physical and chemical studies of some Short grain and Medium slender aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.)” on the basis of the results obtained from the present study under the investigation of head rice recovery, grain length, grain breadth, length breadth ratio, alkali spreading value and amylose content are concluded as the head rice recovery ranged from 51.86-64.70 per cent. Data exhibited that maximum head rice recovery per cent was obtained 64.70% in R-3719 followed by R-3715, i.e., 63.79 per cent and minimum 51.
