  • Smoking is a major risk factor for multiple gastrointestinal cancers, and adversely affects peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux, pancreatitis and Crohn’s disease. Despite key recommendations for diagnosing and treating tobacco use disorder in healthcare settings, the degree to which this is implemented in Gastroenterology (GI) clinics is unknown.

  • The evidence for epigenome-wide associations between smoking and DNA methylation continues to grow through cross-sectional studies. However, few large-scale investigations have explored the associations using observations for individuals at multiple time-points. Here, through the use of the Illumina 450K BeadChip and data collected at two time-points separated by approximately 7 years, we investigate changes in methylation over time associated with quitting smoking or remaining a former smoker, and those associated with continued smoking.

  • Dietary fats are closely related to Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Cholesterol, saturated and trans fats are harmful whereas MUFA, PUFA (especially Omega-3 PUFA) are beneficial for the heart. Choice of heart healthy oil could decrease the occurrence of CAD. This article reviews the benefits/harms of common edible oils on heart health. A heart healthy oil should be cholesterol and trans fats free, low in saturated fats, high in MUFA and PUFA, should have ideal N-6 to N-3 ratio (< 4:1) and high smoking points. Mustard and Canola oils offer to be ideal in this regard.

  • The accuracy of experimental results basically depends on the accuracy of wind tunnel and the quality of smoke on density and constitutive materials. Experimental results permit to determine the position of separation and the form of turbulent region followed from the separation point. Numerical studies were simultaneously realized. Based on obtained experimental and numerical results, the report presents also the comparison between the laminar separation and the turbulent separation.

  • THERE were four of us - George, and William Samuel Harris, and myself, and Montmorency. We were sitting in my room, smoking, and talking about how bad we were - bad from a medical point of view I mean, of course. We were all feeling seedy, and we were getting quite nervous about it. Harris said he felt such extraordinary fits of giddiness come over him at times, that he hardly knew what he was doing; and then George said that HE had fits of giddiness too, and hardly knew what HE was doing. With me, it was my liver that was out of order. I knew...

  • These figures derive from population studies showing the relationship of self reported levels of drinking to risk of harm. It is arbitrary which point on the risk curve is deemed to merit a warning.9-13 Other authorities have quoted weekly recommended upper limits for alcohol consumption of 21 units per week for men and 14 units per week for women.

  • The waiting April woods, sensitive in every leafless twig to spring, stood in silence and dim nightfall around a lodge. Wherever a human dwelling is set in the wilderness, it becomes, by the very humility of its proportions, a prominent and aggressive point. But this lodge of bark and poles was the color of the woods, and nearly escaped intruding as man's work. A glow lighted the top, revealing the faint azure of smoke which rose straight upward in the cool, clear air.

  • "The fire smouldering in the forest of Europe was beginning to burst into flames. In vain did they try to put it out in one place; it only broke out in another. With gusts of smoke and a shower of sparks it swept from one point to another, burning the dry brushwood. Already in the East there were skirmishes as the prelude to the great war of the nations. All Europe, Europe that only yesterday was sceptical and apathetic, like a dead wood, was swept by the flames. All men were possessed by the desire for battle. War was ever on the point of breaking...

  • A Philadelphian had been talking with my mother of North and South, and had alluded to the engagement between the Essex and the Arkansas, on the Mississippi, as a brilliant victory for the Federal navy. My mother protested, at once; said that she and her sister Miriam, and several friends, had been witnesses, from the levee, to the fact that the Confederates had fired and abandoned their own ship when the machinery broke down, after two shots had been exchanged: the Federals, cautiously turning the point, had then captured but a smoking hulk.

  • For over three months No. 3 Squadron had been occupied daily in ranging the heavy guns which night after night crept into their allotted positions in front of Albert. On July 1st 1916 the Somme offensive opened with gas and smoke and a bombardment of unprecedented severity. To the pilots and observers in an artillery squadron the beginning of this battle brought a certain relief, for we were rather tired of flying up and down, being shot at continually by fairly accurate and remarkably well hidden anti-aircraft batteries, while we registered endless guns on uninteresting points.

  • Our paper extends the literature on the relation between corporate governance and earnings management in two ways. First, unlike earnings management, which most firms might engage in routinely to varying degrees, a misstatement of earnings is a rare and serious event in the life of a company. As Zoe-Vonna Palmrose and Susan Scholz point out, a restatement can trigger an SEC investigation, lead to replacement of top executives, and result in the firm being significantly penalized by investors.7 Many restating firms subsequently end up in bankruptcy.

  • Maryland. Repace (2005) measured outdoor fine particle and carcinogen concentrations from OTS on the campus of the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Using controlled experiments, Repace (2005) found that cigarette smoke RSP concentrations decline approximately inversely with distance downwind from the point source, whereas cigarette smoke carcinogen concentrations decline approximately inversely as the square of the distance from source to receptor.

  • This is the first attempt to write the history of smoking in this country from the social point of view. There have been many books written about tobacco--F.W. Fairholt's "History of Tobacco," 1859, and the "Tobacco" (1857) of Andrew Steinmetz, are still valuable authorities--but hitherto no one has told the story of the fluctuations of fashion in respect of the practice of smoking.
