SnO2 nanowires

Two microchips, each with four identical microstructured sensors using SnO2 nanowires as sensing material (one chip decorated with Ag nanoparticles, the other with Pt nanoparticles), were used as a nano-electronic nose to distinguish five different gases and estimate their concentrations.

In the study, SnO2/ZnO core/shell nanowires were synthesized through the two-step processes. First, SnO2- core nanowires were synthesized from Sn powder source at 750 oC by a chemical vapor deposition method (CVD). The ZnO shell was then deposited on SnO2 nanowires by a DC sputtering method.

In this study, heterojunctions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and tin oxide nanowires (SnO2) were investigated to determine their electrical performance for gas sensing applications. The I–V characteristics of the heterojunction were measured in air and H2S gas.

Heterojunctions of metal oxides and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted great attention because of their unique physical properties and giant potential applications. In this study, we report the fabrication of NO2 gas sensors using heterojunctions made of SnO2 nanowires and SWCNTs. The single crystal SnO2 nanowires were grown on Pt electrodes via thermal evaporation. A thin film of SWCNTs was synthesized directly on top of the SnO2 nanowires to form the SnO2/SWCNTs heterojunctions by arc- discharge method.

An array of separated sensors can be used as an electronic nose, but such arrays have a bulky structure and complex fabrication processes.

In the current work, we report a facile synthesis of n-SnO2/p-NiO nanowire heterojunctions by a drop-coating approach. The pure SnO2 and NiO nanowires (NWs) were grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and hydrothermal methods, respectively. Morphology, composition and crystal structures of the NWs and heterojunctions were investigated by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively.

The gas-sensing performance of the SnO2 nanowires sensors annealed at different temperatures have also investigated. The results revealed that the annealed temperatures of 400 C and 500 oC do not affected on gas-sensing performance of SnO2 nanowires sensors, while the annealed temperature of 600oC results in strong decrease in NO2 gas response as compared with as-grown SnO2 nanowires sensor.
