Soil moisture curve

The soil cohesion and angle of internal friction depend greatly on the soil moisture. Specifically, soil with a lower moisture content has a higher shearing strength than that in soil with higher moisture content. The finite element modeling of moisture transfers in unsaturated soils through the relationship between soil moisture, soil suction, unsaturated permeability and soilmoisture dispersivity is capable of accurately predicting the wetting front development.

The literal meaning of Hysteresis is to be lagged behind. In soil system, it is evident that the two soil moisture characteristic curves do not follow the exact same reversible path. As a result a hysteretic behaviour is experienced. Several causes may be attributed like non uniformity of pores, contact angle difference, entrapped air in pore space and the swelling and shrinking property of soil. To predict the hysteretic behaviour, several models defining the character were also suggested like Conceptual models and Empirical models.

Main objective of the study is to determine the importance of growing media physical properties, to assess the water holding capacity of the growing media and to determine the soil moisture characteristics curve for soil, soil + sawdust (2:1), soil + coirpith (2:1).

A watershed is commonly defined as an area in which all water drains to a common point. From a hydrological perspective, a watershed is a useful unit of operation and analysis because it facilitates a systems approach to land and water use in interconnected upstream and downstream areas. Watershed projects aim to maximize the quantity of water available for crops, livestock and human consumption through on-site soil and moisture conservation, infiltration into aquifers, and safe runoff into surface ponds.

Soil moisture is one of the important factor of soil that directly regulate the growth and development of plants. To manage the water scarcity problem during rabi season in south Bihar, we have to know the available water condition to supply optimum water for the crops. The soil is sandy clay loam, slightly alkaline in reaction (pH 7.3). The experiment has split plot design having three fertigation levels of nitrogen (W1=25% N, W2=50% N, W3=75%N of RDF) in main plot and 4 cropping systems i.e. Ricewheat, Rice-barley, Rice-chickpea, Rice-lentil in sub plot.
