This study uncovers a wide range of complex transport dynamics in transiently forced aquifers that has profound implications for the understanding and quantification of solute transport in these important groundwater systems. And the results in this thesis predict that complex transport structures and dynamics arise in natural transiently forced aquifers around the world. When such dynamics do arise, it will lead to mixing and reactive transport patterns that are very different from those predicted by conventional Darcy flow models.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 protein R (HIV-1 Vpr) promotes nuclear entry of viral nucleic acids in nondividing cells, causes G2 cell cycle arrest and is involved in cellular differentiation and cell death. Vpr subcellular localization is as variable as its functions. It is known, that consistent with its role in nuclear transport, Vpr localizes to the nuclear envelope of human cells. Further, a reported ion channel activity of Vpr is clearly dependent on its localization in or at membranes.

Previous results showed that mRNA encoding a putative aquaporin (AQP) (GenBankaccession number AF218314) is present in the tracheolar cells associated with female Aedes aegyptiMalpighian tubules. In this study, immuno-histochemistry detected the protein,AeaAQP, also in tra-cheolar cells, suggesting its involvement in water movement in the respiratory system. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes,AeaAQP increased the osmotic water permeability from15·10 )6 to 150 ·10 )6 mÆs )1 , whichwas inhibited by mercury ions. Rogers syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder result-ing in megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus, and sensori-neural deafness. The gene associated with this disease encodes for thiamine transporter 1 (THTR1), a member of the SLC19 solute carrier family including THTR2 and the reduced folate carrier (RFC). Using transient transfections into NIH3T3 cells of a D93H mutant THTR1derived from a Rogers syndrome family, we determined the expression, post-translational modification, plasma mem-brane targeting and thiamine transport activity.
