Education in public speaking often relies largely on qualitative feedback. In this study, we explored how a numerical feedback form based on a validated scale could be used in an educational public speaking program. Data were collected at three clubs of Toastmasters International.

This study casts light on the use of five inflectional morphemes, namely progressive/ present participle -ing, plural -s, past tense -ed (for both regular and irregular verbs), past participle -en and third-person -s by three candidates at three different band levels in the IELTS Speaking test. The candidates were to take part in a simulated IELTS Speaking test, and their performances were transcribed verbatim to calculate the error rate and overuse errors of the five morphemes.

Their ratings before and after the training session on the VSTEP.3-5 speaking rating scales were then compared. Particularly, dimensions of score reliability, criterion difficulty, rater severity, rater fit, rater bias, and score band separation were analyzed. Positive results were detected when the post-training ratings were shown to be more reliable, consistent, and distinguishable. Improvements were more noticeable for the score band separation and slighter in other aspects.

In Kenya, small grant awardee Safe Womanhood Organization (SWH) held a large-scale pneumonia awareness event for Somali and Oromo refugees of Eastleigh residing in Nairobi. These refugees, who often do not speak English or Swahili — the languages of their host country — find it hard to decipher publicly-available information or to engage with neighboring communities.
