In this study, the effect of alkaline-treated spent coffee grounds and compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of bio-composite based on polypropylene (PP) matrix was investigated. After alkaline treatment, the surface of spent coffee grounds became rougher; hence the PP matrix could better adsorb and encapsulate the treated coffee grounds compared with that of untreated ones. Spent coffee ground (SCG) has attracted increasing attention since it contains many useful components such as polysaccharides, protein, lipid, and bioactive compounds. The aim of this research was to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis to release important sugars in the SCG using different pretreatment methods. Spent coffee grounds were pretreated by alkali pretreatment, organosolv pretreatment, and the combined process

Magnetic and nonmagnetic activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared by using AC obtained from spent coffee grounds (SCGs) for use in CO2 and CH4 capture. SCGs were activated by chemical activation to produce ACs and a magnetic α-Fe2O3/AC composite was prepared by coprecipitation method from the ACs produced. Magnetic and nonmagnetic samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) techniques.

Low-cost activated carbon (AC) samples obtained from waste coffee grounds were used for CO2 and CH4 adsorption. ACs were prepared by chemical activation and carbonized at three different temperatures. AC carbonized at 800◦C showed a relatively high surface area (582.92 m2 g−1) and high adsorption capacities of 2.6 mmol g−1 and 1.1 mmol g−1 at 25◦C for CO2 and CH4, respectively. Adsorbent samples were prepared by loading of Fe3+ metal ions onto ACs and their adsorption capacities were compared with those of nonloaded ACs.

Cobalt-impregnated spent coffee ground biochar (Co-SCG) was synthesized and applied for tetracycline (TC) removal from water. The concentration of 16 PAHs in Co-SCG biochar was studied also. Results demonstrated that Co-SCG was an effective eco-friendly material for the removal of tetracycline from water.
