Nowadays, in Vietnam as in the world, traditional building materials are increasingly scarce while industrial waste is produced more and more. In this paper, the author uses steel slag, a byproduct of steelmaking processes, for replacing crushed aggregate in base or subbase course. Steel slag-stone dust aggregate (70% steel slag and 30% stone dust) are treated with a cement content of 4%- 8%.

This study aims to present about national and international regulations, standards reletated to environment parameters when using steel slag as building materials and backfill materials. As a part of this research, environmetal tests were undertaken to determine the hazardous components, natural radioactivity and potential of leaching heavy metals of steel slag samples.

In addition, chemical components of Formosa GBFS and other Vietnamese products are generally similar to those Japanese and European products and the inorganic hazardous components of Formosa GBFS are evidently lower than threshold values by Vietnamese Technical Regulation and therefore, Formosa GBFS satisfy environmental requirements when used as an alternative geo-material in construction in Vietnam.

Due to rapid industrialization and modernization, a large number of both fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), both by-products from thermal power plants and steel factories, are increasing day by day. Thus, recycling these industrial wastes to produce lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) was investigated in this study.

This study aims to characterize and investigate steel slag for the removal of its persistent organic pollutants (measured as COD) from pulp mill wastewater. Steel slag and its NaOH-modified states were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size, and volume analysis.

Samples of Granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) from Formosa steel plant (called as Formosa GBFS) were collected and used for several testing series regarding potential application as an alternative material in construction and civil works. Unhydrated GBFS particle shows river sand-like shapes by all appearances with more angular and therefore, it shows higher shear strength than those of natural sand.

In this study, physico-mechanical and chemical properties of GBFS produced by Formosa steel plant in Vietnam (named as Formosa GBFS) were observed and compared with those of GBFS produced in Japan. Such comparisons were also performed with a granite rock-crushed sand which is widely applied as an alternative construction material to natural sand in Thua Thien Hue province.

Nowadays, wastewater from various industries contains a large number of harmful heavy metals and coloring agents, which have to be removed to restore the quality of the environment. In this study, the removal of nickel ions (Ni2+) and methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution using steel slag as a low cost adsorbent was investigated. The chemical and mineralogical compositions, as well as the surface area of slag, were analyzed by using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET).

In this paper, we aim to analyze the influence of the accelerated carbonation condition in the laboratory on the physio-chemical properties of carbonated steel slag. Materials composition was characterized by using different analysis techniques of XRD, SEM, TG and others measurements of the physio-properties (density, loss on ignition L.O.I.) were also realized with regard to the requirement of national standard TCVN 7570:2006 for concrete aggregate.

A new type of environment friendly polymer-modified waterproof mortar (PMWM) was developed through adding ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/vinyl acetate–vinyl ester of versatic acid (Va–VeoVa) mixture (re-dispersible emulsion powder), mine tailings, quartz sand and additives to the eco-cement, which was prepared by grinding the mixture of steel slag, blast-furnace slag, fly ash and activator. The optimal material proportioning of PMWM was obtained based on the Orthogonal experiment: re-dispersible emulsion powder, 11 wt.%; cement–sand ratio, 1:3.

This paper deals with using stainless steel reducing slag (SSRS), a byproduct generated from stainless steel making process, as a cement substitute in production of soil-based controlled low-strength material (CLSM). In the CLSM mixture, surplus soil and river sand were blended well together with a sand-soil proportion of 6:4 by volume in order to produce fine aggregate. Totally, twelve mixtures were prepared for experiment when we changed in turn percentages of Portland cement replacement with SSRS of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight and the water-to-binder ratio of 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8.
