Stem and pod rot

Stem and pod rot of groundnut caused by the pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii, which has a wide host range and it affects the yield losses up to 30-40% in groundnut in India. The persistence of infection caused by sclerotia of S. rolfsii inciting disease stem and pod rot of groundnut following the incorporation of mustard (Brassica nigra) plant parts into soil was examined through an experiment under greenhouse conditions.

Stem and Pod rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is one of the major constraint affecting the seed and oil production in groundnut growing areas of the world. An attempt was made to manage the disease by holistic approach. In vitro evaluation of different concentrations of mustard was conducted using two types of methods...

Biotic and abiotic stresses are major constraints in the production of groundnut. Among biotic stresses apart from bacterial and viral diseases, many fungal diseases are of economic importance. The major fungal diseases are Early leaf spot (Cercospora arachidicola), Late leaf spot (Cercosporidium personatum), Rust (Puccinia arachidis), Botrytis blight (Botrytis cinera), Aflarot/Yellow mould (Aspergillus flavus), Damping off (Pythium spp.

A survey was conducted in major groundnut growing areas of Karnataka during kharif 2013 and kharif 2014 to identify hot spots of stem and pod rot of groundnut. A total of 80 different locations of eight districts of Karnataka were covered during the survey. During kharif 2013, the highest stem rot (62.80%) and pod rot (73.67%) was recorded in Chitradurga district followed by Tumkur district which recorded stem rot incidence of 42.59% and pod rot of 40.70%.

Genetic variability among the 24 isolates of S. rolfsii was studied by using molecular markers like ITS-PCR and RAPD primers. Amplification of ITS region of rDNA with specific ITS1 and ITS4 universal primers produced approximately 650 to 700 bp in all the isolates of the fungus confirmed that all the isolates obtained are Sclerotium rolfsii and were sequenced. Identity of the isolates was confirmed with sequences of NCBI data base of S. rolfsii.

Groundnut is a major legume and important oil seed crop belongs to family Fabaceae. A large number of diseases attack groundnut plant in India, of these stem rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is the most common disease. The present study was conducted in experimental field of SHUATS for management of stem rot disease of groundnut (Sclerotium rolfsii) which is most important destructive disease of groundnut in India. Therefore present studies were undertaken to test Trichoderma viride, Neem cake, vermicompost and the combinations along with the treated check (Vitavax).
