Storage of onion seeds

The experiment was carried out to understand the storability of onion seeds by subjecting to different modified atmospheric storage conditions with different combination of gases like carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen at different concentrations. The experiment was consisted of seed storage of onion (Arka Kalyan) under modified atmospheric storage conditions.

Seed priming with antioxidants can help the seeds to retain their viability for much longer, as the major cause of seed deterioration in onion seed is the production of ROS which is produced as the age of seed increases leading seeds to loose viability. Therefore use of antioxidants may have potential to be cost effective mechanism for prolonging the storage life.

In onion, among the postharvest diseases, black mold rot caused by Aspergillus niger is the predominant one. The pathogen is transmitted by contaminated seed or soil. The infection usually begins at germination of onion seeds and may continue throughout storage. The storage experiment was conducted from July, 2017 to March, 2018 at the Seed Quality Research Laboratory, National Seed Project, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad to know the “Influence of desiccants on quality of onion seeds during storage”. The experiment involved storage of onion seeds cv. Arkakalyan with three desiccants viz., Zeolite beads (T1), Bentonite granules (T2), Charcoal granules (T3) and control (T4). The lab experiment was laid out with completely randomised block design to study the effect of different seed packing materials with silica gel and vacuum packing on seed longevity of onion variety Arka Kalyan with three replications for twelve months at Seed Testing and Research laboratory, Seed Unit, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur. The results showed that, the impervious containers recorded minimum seed deterioration compared to previous container (cloth bag).

An experiment was conducted to know the effect of storage conditions on seed quality of onion cv. Arka kalyan. The experiment consisted of three storage conditions (ambient condition, conditioned cold storage (18-20◦C, 45-50% RH), commercial cold storage (5-7 ͦC , 65 % RH). The results revealed that, seeds stored in commercial cold storage (5-7 ͦC + 65 % RH) recorded significantly higher seed germination, speed of germination, test weight, root length, shoot length, seedling dry weight, vigour index, lower moisture content and electrical conductivity after 10 months of storage.
