Erwinia is a genus of Enterobacteriacea containing mostly pathogens, which cause soft rot disease in many ornamental plants and crops, including Asparagus officinalis. Chemical treatments to control Erwinia have lost their attractiveness because of the development of resistant strains and the negative impacts on the environment and human health.

Over the past decades, researchers and scientists have paid more and more attention to the discovery of novel antibiotics and anticancer agents in fighting infection and cancer diseases. It is believed that endophytic actinomycetes from medicinal plants provide abundant resources for new compounds with significant bioactive properties. In the present study, we assessed antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of endophytic actinomycetes associated with Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers.

Bacteria within the genus Streptomyces remain a major source of new natural product discovery and as soil inoculants in agriculture where they promote plant growth and protect from disease. Recently, Streptomyces spp. have been implicated as important members of naturally disease-suppressive soils.

Acidophilic members of the genus Streptomyces can be a good source for novel secondary metabolites and degradative enzymes of biopolymers. In this study, a genome-based approach on Streptomyces yeochonensis CN732, a representative neutrotolerant acidophilic streptomycete, was employed to examine the biosynthetic as well as enzymatic potential, and also presence of any genetic tools for adaptation in acidic environment.

Native isolates of groundnut stem rot casual organism, Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. were collected from major groundnut growing areas of Tamil Nadu. Selected isolates were screened, characterized and identified the virulent isolate. Morphology and spore structure of isolated antagonists, GNRAJK1 and GNRAVR14 were studied. The genus and species level of the antagonists was identified as Streptomyces violaceusniger and Streptomyces exfoliatus.

A novel Streptomyces sp. Ru87 was isolated from Egyptian soil and showed significant inhibition activities against a number of food and blood borne pathogens. Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics showed that Ru87 belongs to genus Streptomyces. 16 S rRNA gene sequence (KY775360), showed 98% identity with Streptomyces cacaoi strain NBRC 12748. However, phylogenetic analysis indicated that it is distinct from the known species. A cultured extract of this strain inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and some other foodborne and blood borne pathogens.

A total of 17 endophytic actinomycete strains were obtained from 6 medicinal plants of Mizoram, Northeast, India. 16S rRNA results showed 13 (73.3%) of the isolates belonged to the genus Streptomyces, 2 (13.3%) were Nocardiopsis, 1 (6.6%) were Tsukamurella tyrosinosolvens and 1 (6.6%) Actinobacteria bacterium. The highest number of endophytic actinomycetes was isolated from root tissue of Mikania micrantha Kunth. WI. (29.4%) followed by stem of Mikania micrantha Kunth. WI. and rhizome of Costus speciosus (J. Konig).

Filamentous bacteria of the genus Streptomyces produce a large arsenal of industrially relevant antibiotics and enzymes. The industrial production of these molecules occurs in large fermenters, where many streptomycetes form dense mycelial networks called pellets.

Environmental contamination by toxic heavy metals is causing a serious problem worldwide. The objective of the study was the utilization of eco-friendly and low-cost effective biomass of actinomycetes in the removal the toxic heavy metals (Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+) from wastewater. Out of sixty-six isolates of actinomycetes were isolated from different drains in Egypt, eleven isolates removed studied heavy metals (Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+) singly above 70% were selected to remove metals from ternary mixtures. The biosorption by dead biomass for all isolates was higher than that by living biomass.

In this study, ribotyping (restriction polymorphism ribosomal RNA analyses) was applied as a taxonomic tool for bacteria belonging to the genus Nocardia. A total of 21 Nocardia strains were clearly distinguished using a combination of EcoRV gene restriction endonuclease patterns together with a digoxigenin-labelled Streptomyces violaceoruber TK21 rDNA probe.
