Regulatory problems such as excessive crying, sleeping–and feeding difficulties in infancy are some of the earliest precursors of later mental health difficulties emerging throughout the lifespan. In the present study, the inter-rater reliability and acceptance of a structured computer-assisted diagnostic interview for regulatory problems (Baby-DIPS) was investigated.

Somatic symptoms are common and costly for society and correlate with sufering and low functioning. Nevertheless, little is known about the long-term implications of somatic symptoms. The objective of this study was to assess if somatic symptoms in adolescents with depression and in their matched controls predict severe mental illness in adulthood by investigating the use of hospital-based care consequent to diferent mental disorders.

As part of the project we follow an ascertainment protocol which involves several measures and procedures. Parents or guardians must complete an informed consent form with the help of a psychologist or social worker. Subsequently, parents are interviewed using the Vineland Behavior Adaptive Scales, a structured interview about adaptive behavior (observed communication, social behavior, and daily living skills at home and in the community).

The advantages and limitations of conventional structural MRI for the diagnosis and monitoring of MS are discussed by Andreadou (Chapter 15). There is often a disparity between the level of structural abnormality seen on MRI and level of cognitive difficulties expressed by the patient with MS.
