The accumulation of soluble sugars, especially sucrose, in mature Vietnamese golden melon, has been reported to be the determining factor of the sweetness of fruits. The gene of SPS2 has been shown to be mainly involved in the metabolic signal pathway as those for the synthesis of sucrose.

Association study is a powerful means for identifying molecular markers, such as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with important traits in forest trees. Catalpa fargesii Bur is a valuable commercial tree in China and identifying SNPs that associate with wood property would make a foundation of the markerassisted breeding in the future. However, related work has not been reported yet.

Amylose accumulation in rice grains is controlled by genetic and environmental factors. Amylose content is a determinant factor of rice quality in terms of cooking and eating. Great variations in amylose content in indica rice cultivars have been observed.

Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) genes play vital roles in sucrose production across various plant species. Modern sugarcane cultivar is derived from the hybridization between the high sugar content species Saccharum officinarum and the high stress tolerance species Saccharum spontaneum, generating one of the most complex genomes among all crops.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a widely adapted perennial forage crop that has high biomass production potential. Enhanced cellulose content in alfalfa stems would increase the value of the crop as a bioenergy feedstock. We examined if increased expression of sucrose synthase (SUS; EC 2.4.1.13) would increase cellulose in stem cell walls.

Sugarcane accumulates very high levels of sucrose in the culm. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that allows such high sucrose synthesis and accumulation (up to 650 mM) is made difficult by the complexity of the highly polyploid genome.

Sugarcane is cultivated throughout the Indo-Gangetic plains of South Asia and Maharashtra is second largest producer. The leaf samples were collected at different stages of crop growth from Rahuri farm and were evaluated for nitrate assimilating enzyme viz., in vitro nitrate reductase and sucrose metabolizing enzymes activities viz., sucrose synthase, sucrose phosphate synthase and acid invertase. The experiment was laid out in R.B.D. with four replications and six treatments.

The kinetic data on sugarcane (Saccharumspp. hybrids) sucrose synthase (SuSy, UDP-glucose: D-fructose 2-a-D-glucosyltransferase, EC 2.4.1.13) are limited. We character-ized kinetically a SuSy activity partially purified from sugarcane variety N19 leaf roll tissue. Primary plot analysis and product inhibition studies showed that a compulsory order ternary complex mechanism is followed, with UDP binding first and UDP-glucose dissociating last from the enzyme.
