  • The aim of this research was to investigate the formation of hydrogen sulphide for different sewage characteristics and flow rates. An experimental set-up was developed to simulate a section of a gravity sewer pipe, the set-up comprised of a pipe of 2 m long and 155 mm inside diameter, referred to in this thesis as a laboratory sewer pipe. The first stage of the experimental program involved developing a biological growth rich in sulphate-reducing bacteria inside the laboratory sewer pipe using synthetic sewage.

  • Alkaline pulping liquors are the problematic for environment due to their toxicity and poor biodegradability. During last decade, anaerobic treatment technology has been successfully applied to various types of pulp and paper industry effluents. In the present study, the treatment of highly toxic pulping liquors in lab-scale has been done using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from sediment samples of pulp and paper mills in Vietnam. This treatment could reduce 70 - 75% of COD after three weeks. The COD removal could achieve 82 - 88% by subsequent aerobic treatment in 48 hours.

  • This study was conducted to isolate sulphur oxidising bacteria from saline soils of groundnut growing places in Andhra Pradesh, India and they were characterized based upon their morphological and biochemical characteristics. Among 10 isolates five were capable of reducing the pH of the growth media below 5.0 from initial pH 8.0 and made the highest sulphate production in the growth media and sulphate production of isolates ranges from 1.264 mM to 0.390 mM.

  • Microbial biofilm and corrosion in cooling systems are the most common problems that damage expensive equipment, cause loss of production, and increase maintenance costs. Sulfate reducing bacteria were considered the major bacterial group involved in microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).

  • The sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from Bach Ho oil well (H strain), Thi Nai pond sediments in Quy Nhon (6C) was used to evaluate the degradability of crude oil and oil products. The oil samples were treated by specific strains and their combination. It was shown that after 3 to 7 weeks of treatment these strains degraded up to 36 - 57% of residual oil, 7 - 12% of crude oil and 19 - 21% of fuel oil (FO) in the medium. The oil degradability of all samples increased 3 - 12% in the present of biosurfactants compared to the case without adding biosurfactants.

  • During high precipitation, infiltration of sulphates and chromates occurred, and subsequently when low precipitation, the aquifer without recharge becomes a confined environment favourable to a reduction of sulphates to sulphide (H2S and HS¯) by a complex biochemical process (a phenomenon called sulphatoreducing), due to the bacterial activity. Subsequently, this reduction results from the sulphur rejected (Khe´rici et al., 2009) by a sulphato-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio desulfricans), which can transform of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is a stable substance.
