The effect of circadian rhythms on drug metabolism and efcacy are being increasingly recognized. However, the extent to which they afect general anesthesia remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the efects of circadian rhythms on anesthetic depth and the concentrations of propofol target-controlled infusion (TCI).

The present study was conducted to identify sexually dimorphic regions in the chicken hypothalamus. Brain samples of apparently healthy chicken of either sex of 6-7 weeks was processed and consecutively stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin, Cresyl Violet and Toluidine Blue. The length and breadth of selected nuclei (preoptic nucleus, periventricular preoptic nucleus, medial suprachiasmatic nucleus and lateral hypothalamic nucleus) was calculated by Leica Qwin Images Analyser software in Leica DM 2000 Microscope.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) generates and controls the circadian rhythms in mammals including the rhythm of locomotor activity. Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipose tissue that informs the brain about the fat stores. SCN neurons express leptin receptors.

The basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor DEC1 is expressed in a circadian manner in the suprachiasmatic nucleus where it seems to play a role in regulating the mammalian circadian rhythm by suppressing the CLOCK/BMAL1-activated promoter. The interaction of DEC1 with BMAL1 has been suggested as one of the molecular mechanisms of the suppression [Honma, S., Kawamoto, T., Takagi, Y., Fujimoto, K., Sato, F., Noshiro, M., Kato, Y. & Honma, K. Circadian timing from the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a critical component of sleep regulation. Animal lesion and genetic studies have indi-cated an essential interaction between the circadian signals and the homeo-static processes that regulate sleep. Here we summarize the biological functions of prokineticins, a pair of newly discovered regulatory proteins, with focus on the circadian function of prokineticin 2 (PK2) and its poten-tial role in sleep-wake regulation.

Melatonin is a ubiquitous molecule and widely distributed in nature, with functional activity occurring in unicellular organisms, plants, fungi and animals. In most vertebrates, including humans, melatonin is synthes-ized primarily in the pineal gland and is regulated by the environmental light⁄dark cycle via the suprachiasmatic nucleus.
