The purpose of the thesis "An empirical analysis of firm innovation capability and performance of Indonesian ICT SMEs" is to explore the antecedents of innovation capability and firm performance of ICT SMEs within clusters in Jakarta and Bandung in Indonesia. A causal model was proposed and tested by using Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM). Findings reveal that intellectual capital is a major contributor of innovation capability. Surprisingly, being spatially close in a specific location does not trigger firms to have innovation capability.

The triangulated data results are surprisingly revealing in many essential aspects of vocabulary instruction, ranging from selecting vocabulary, teaching vocabulary directly and indirectly, explaining vocabulary meanings, teaching vocabulary through skills in various teaching phases in class. Hopefully, the findings of the study have provided an insightful understanding of vocabulary teaching practices in the primary school settings in Vietnam. From these empirical findings, relevant implications are suggested for better vocabulary instruction to young learners in Vietnam.

The expression of the choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) enzyme that synthesizes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) is upregulated by ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF). We studied the involvement of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway in regulating ChAT expression in a murine septal cell line. Surprisingly, we found that PD98059 and U0126, two structurally distinct inhibitors of MAPK kinase (MEK1), increased both basal and CNTF-induced ACh production.

important regulators of biological processes in animals and plants. MiRNAs regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level by binding to mRNAs and either inhibit translation or modify the stability of the mRNA. Due to the important biological role of miRNAs it is of great interest to study their expression level in the cells. Furthermore, miRNAs have been associated with cancer and other diseases [1] and miRNA expression can help in the diagnosis and prognostic of human disease [2,3].

People everywhere expected the new millennium to bring surprises. But the particular shock and horror that rippled through the international viticulture community in 2000 was most unexpected. It had been found that sixteen of the most highly prized varieties of wine-making grapes were the products of mating between the classic Pinot and the classically undervalued Gouais grape. This blew the proverbial cork off the industry's bottle because the Gouais was considered such an inferior specimen that there were even attempts to ban its cultivation in France during the Middle Ages.

Aerobic metabolism of phenylalanine in most bacteria proceeds via oxidation to phenylacetate. Surprisingly, the further metabolism of phenylacetate has not been elucida-ted, even in well studied bacteria such as Escherichia coli. The only committed step is the conversion of phenylacetate into phenylacetyl-CoA. The paaoperon ofE. coliencodes 14 polypeptides involved in the catabolismof phenylacetate. We have found thatE.

In this paper we describe the Rovereto Emotive Corpus (REC) which we collected to investigate the relationship between emotion and cooperation in dialogue tasks. It is an area where still many unsolved questions are present. One of the main open issues is the annotation of the socalled “blended” emotions and their recognition. Usually, there is a low agreement among raters in annotating emotions and, surprisingly, emotion recognition is higher in a condition of modality deprivation (i. e. only acoustic or only visual modality vs. bimodal display of emotion). ...

Replication of DNA is essential for the propagation of life. It is somewhat surprising then that, despite the vital nature of this process, cellular organ-isms show a great deal of variety in the mechanisms that they employ to ensure appropriate genome duplication. This diversity is manifested along classical evolutionary lines, with distinct combinations of replicon architec-ture and replication proteins being found in the three domains of life: the Bacteria, the Eukarya and the Archaea.

DNA repair must take place within the context of chromatin, and it is therefore not surprising that many aspects of both chromatin components and proteins that modify chromatin have been implicated in this process. One of the best-characterized chromatin modification events in DNA-dam-age responses is the phosphorylation of the SQ motif found in histone H2A or the H2AX histone variant in higher eukaryotes. This modification is an early response to the induction of DNA damage, and occurs in a wide range of eukaryotic organisms, suggesting an important conserved func-tion....

Duchenne muscular dystrophy represents one of the most common hereditary diseases. Abnormal ion handling is believed to render dystrophin-deficient muscle fibres more susceptible to necrosis. Although a reduced Ca 2+ buffering capacity has been shown to exist in the dystrophic sarco-plasmic reticulum, surprisingly no changes in the abundance of the main luminal Ca 2+ reservoir protein calsequestrin have been observed inmicrosomal preparations.

The discovery of novel biologically active peptides has led to an explosion in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the regula-tion of sleep and wakefulness. Urotensin II (UII), a peptide originally isolated from fish and known for its strong cardiovascular effects in mammals, is another surprising candidate in the regulatory network of sleep.

These observations led to the proposal that mesotrypsin is a defective digestive protease on protein substrates. Surprisingly, the studies reported here with a1 -antitrypsin (a1AT) revealed that, even though mesotrypsin was com-

A correct three-dimensional structure is a prerequisite for protein function-ality, and therefore for life. Thus, it is not surprising that our cells are packed with proteins that assist protein folding, the process in which the native three-dimensional structure is formed.
