A retaining wall constructed on expansive soil can be subjected to lateral swelling pressures due to soil swelling, which may cause a significant horizontal deformation and bending of the retaining wall. In Australia, it is generally assumed that the backfill behind a retaining wall is non-expansive material. Therefore lateral swelling pressures induced by expansive soils are ignored in routine design.

Thyroid swellings are prevalent in the Indian population and are seen in about 4-7% of them. They are common in women and their incidence increases with age, exposure to radiation and intake of goitrogens. These swellings cause cosmetic deformity and also produce pressure symptoms due to their location and size. They are viewed with suspicion as the incidence of cancer is high. FNAC of thyroid is a sensitive, easy, cost effective, and a reliable screening test for evaluating these lesions.

Naturally aged rice is generally preferred in Indian subcontinent since, it swells better during cooking, cooked kernels are less sticky with more linear elongation and produces thin gruel. Natural ageing is done by storing harvested paddy for at least 4-6 months before milling. Accelerated ageing is an artificial technique that induces ageing effect in rice within a short period of time. Under hydrothermal treatment, dry (@14% moisture) paddy samples were steamed at three pressures (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 kg/cm2 gauge) for 5, 10 and 15 min.

This article first presents ALCYONE V1.4 RIA-related features and modeling. It especially focuses on recent developments dedicated on the one hand to nonsteady water heat and mass transport and on the other hand to the modeling of grain boundary cracking-induced fission gas release and swelling. This article then compares some simulations of RIA transients performed on UO2-M5® fuel rods in flowing sodium or stagnant water coolant conditions to the relevant experimental results gained from tests performed in either the French CABRI or the Japanese NSRR nuclear transient reactor facilities.

Papilledema This connotes bilateral optic disc swelling from raised intracranial pressure (Fig. 29-12). Headache is a frequent, but not invariable, accompaniment. All other forms of optic disc swelling, e.g., from optic neuritis or ischemic optic neuropathy, should be called "optic disc edema." This convention is arbitrary but serves to avoid confusion. Often it is difficult to differentiate papilledema from other forms of optic disc edema by fundus examination alone. Transient visual obscurations are a classic symptom of papilledema.
