Reproductive efficiency has a great impact on the economic success of pork production. Gilts comprise a significant portion of breeding females and gilts that reach puberty earlier tend to stay in the herd longer and be more productive.

Recent completion of swine genome may simplify the production of swine as a large biomedical model. Here we studied sequence and location of known swine miRNA genes, key regulators of protein-coding genes at the level of RNA, and compared them to human and mouse data to prioritize future molecular studies.

Feed intake and growth are economically important traits in swine production. Previous genome wide association studies (GWAS) have utilized average daily gain or daily feed intake to identify regions that impact growth and feed intake across time.

Reproductive performance is critical for efficient swine production. Recent results indicated that vulva size (VS) may be predictive of reproductive performance in sows. Study objectives were to estimate genetic parameters, identify genomic regions associated, and estimate genomic prediction accuracies (GPA) for VS traits.

Salmonella enterica serovars are a major cause of foodborne illness and have a substantial impact on global human health. In Canada, Salmonella is commonly found on swine farms and the increasing concern about drug use and antimicrobial resistance associated with Salmonella has promoted research into alternative control methods, including selecting for pig genotypes associated with resistance to Salmonella.

Colostrum and milk are essential sources of antibodies and nutrients for the neonate, playing a key role in their survival and growth. Slight abnormalities in the timing of colostrogenesis/lactogenesis potentially threaten piglet survival. To further delineate the genes and transcription regulators implicated in the control of the transition from colostrogenesis to lactogenesis, we applied RNA-seq analysis of swine mammary gland tissue from late-gestation to farrowing.

Direct molecular cloning of full-length cDNAs derived from viral RNA is an approach to identify the individual viral genomes within a virus population. This enables characterization of distinct viral haplotypes present during infection.

Swine streptococcosis has caused great economic loss in the swine industry, and the major pathogen responsible for this disease is Streptococcus Suis serotype 2 (SS2). Disease resistance breeding is a fundamental way of resolving this problem. With the development of GWAS and transcriptomic microarray technology, we now have powerful research tools to identify SS2 resistance genes.

Sperm DNA integrity is considered essential for successful transmission of the paternal genome, fertilization and normal embryo development. DNA fragmentation index (DFI, %) has become a key parameter in the swine artificial insemination industry to assess sperm DNA integrity.

Embryonic mortality is a major concern in the commercial swine industry and primarily occurs early in gestation, but also during mid-gestation (~ days 50–70). Previous reports demonstrated that the embryonic loss rate was significant lower in Meishan than in commercial breeds (including Duroc). Most studies have focused on embryonic mortality in early gestation, but little is known about embryonic loss during mid-gestation.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) remains a major problem associated with swine production. Thus, understanding the physiological changes of postnatal IUGR piglets would aid in improving growth performance.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a causative agent of serious viral enteric disease in suckling pigs. Such diseases cause considerable economic losses in the global swine industry. Enhancing our knowledge of PEDV-induced transcriptomic responses in host cells is imperative to understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the immune response.

This present study has aimed to provide a molecular characterization of rotavirus species A (RVA) and to determine the frequency of RVC and RVH in fecal specimens from nonvaccinated piglets, across 5 farms in the metropolitan mesoregion of Belém, within the Amazon region, Brazil. In the previous study, porcine RVA was found in 9.9% (17/172) during the years 2008-2009. Using RT-PCR, Sanger nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses, the entire genomes of 17 Brazilian porcine RVA strains were analyzed.

TheNS5Bproteinof the classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of the virus and is able to catalyze the viral genome replication. The 3¢ un-translated region is most likely involved in regulation of the Pestivirusgenome replication. However, little is known about the interaction between the CSFV NS5B protein and the viral genome. We used different RNA templates derived fromthe plus-strand viral genome, or theminus-strand viral genome and the CSFV NS5B protein obtained from the Escherichia coliexpression system to address this problem....
