Synthetic opioid
-
Ebook "A time-release history of the opioid epidemic" is dedicated to the chemists and the staffs in the laboratories that were trying to solve an age-old issue—relieving pain. We have heard through news agencies, doctors, and other specialists that opioids are the root of all sorts of social maladies and that a culture war in America is raging: the employed becoming unemployed, slowly destroying neighborhoods, wrecking families; and yet, they have become central to mainstream healthcare delivery for those seeking pain relief.

New psychoactive substances (NPS) continue to emerge in the drug market every year, becoming a global threat to public health and safety. These compounds are mostly synthetic cannabinoids and designer cathinones. However, synthetic opioids have appeared on the recreational drug markets in recent years, particularly fentanyl and its derivatives (“fentanyls”).

Remifentanil has been reported to cause post-anesthetic shivering (PAS). Higher doses of remifentanil reportedly induce more intense PAS. Tramadol, a synthetic opioid that acts at multiple sites, is considered to be an effective treatment for PAS, but the evidence for its therapeutic benefit after remifentanil anesthesia is limited.

Meperidine is a synthetic opioid that belongs to the phenylpiperidine class and is a weak mu receptor agonist. In horses there are a limited number of published studies describing the analgesic effects of systemically administered meperidine in horses. The objective of this study was to describe the pharmacokinetics, behavioral and physiologic effects and effect on thermal threshold of three doses of intravenously administered meperidine to horses.

Spinal block is a common procedure for lower limbs surgery. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid and dexmedetomidine, a selective α2 agonist have been used as adjuvants in spinal anesthesia to prolong intraoperative and postoperative analgesia. The aim of current study is to compare the efficacy of dexmedetomidine and fentanyl added to intrathecal bupivacaine in orthopedic procedures in lower limbs.

Butorphanol, a synthetic opioid partial agonist analgesic, has been widely used to control perioperative pain. However, the ideal dose and availability of butorphanol for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy are not well known. The aim of this study was to evaluated the 95% effective dose (ED95) of butorphanol and sufentanil in GI endoscopy and compared their clinical efficacy, especially regarding the recovery time.

Management of acute pain, especially post-operative pain, in patients on high dose opioids is a challenge that requires in-depth knowledge of pharmacokinetics and the formulation of a careful management plan to avoid withdrawal symptoms and inadequate pain management. • Chronic pain after cancer surgery may occur in up to 50% of patients. Risk factors for the development of chronic pain after breast cancer surgery include: young age, chemo and radiotherapy, poor post-operative pain control and certain surgical factors.
