  • A phantom node method is developed for problems discretized by 4-node quadrilateral elements to describe arbitrary cracks. By overlapping elements at the position of the crack, the method may treat cracks independently of the mesh.

  • In the present work, author combined the phase-field modeling taking into account interfacial damage with the problem of the bulk strain orthogonal decompositions by two proposed solutions. The successful prediction of the crack propagation for the inclusion-matrix structures and the multi-phases materials of X-ray computed tomography (XR-CT) images by two proposed solutions will be demonstrated in several numerical examples.

  • For plate bending problems, using a plate theory to model thin plate structures is less computationally expensive than 3D modelling. The Kirchhoff-Love plate theory is appropriate for analysing thin plate structures. If the membrane deformation is ignored in the KirchhoffLove plate, each node has only one degree of freedom – the deflection.

  • In this paper, the extended consecutive-interpolation finite element method (XCFEM) is employed to model the mix-mode interface cracks between two dissimilar isotropic materials. This will take advantage of the idea of the consecutive-interpolation finite element method (CFEM) and the enrichment functions of XFEM for discontinuous problems.

  • This paper addresses the problem of repairing multiple cracked beams subjected to static load using piezoelectric patches. First, the problem is formulated and solved analytically for the case of two cracks that results in ratio of restoring moments produced by employed piezoelectric patches. Since the ratio is dependent only on crack positions but not their depth, the result obtained for case of two cracks has been extended for the case of multiple cracks.

  • The problem of using the modal curvature for crack detection is discussed in this paper based on an exact expression of mode shape and its curvature. Using the obtained herein exact expression for the mode shape and its curvature, it is demonstrated that the mode shape curvature is really more sensitive to crack than mode shape itself. Nevertheless, crack-induced change in the approximate curvature calculated from the exact mode shape by the central finite difference technique (Laplacian) is much greater in comparison with both the mode shape and curvature.

  • The surface profile of Fresnel lens during the fabrication process depends on many factors including the thickness, flatness, and pattern clarity of a photoresist (PR) film used as a hard mask for the Si lithography. SU-8 PR with a high viscosity, which is capable of creating large thickness films, can be used as a hard mask in the Fresnel lens fabrication processes. However, it is not easy to achieve a film thickness of about 10 µm with the requirement of a flat surface, free of air bubbles after the baking phases.

  • The peeling qualities of tomato by using ohmic heating assisted lye-salt concentrations were investigated. The principle of ohmic heating is dissipation of electrical energy into heat which results in internal energy generation. The other methods of peeling are possess various disadvantages which include use of caustic, high pH, problem of waste disposal, high pressure and energy and excessive use of water with the latter. In this study, ohmic peeling was attempted to potentially address these problems.

  • Poor fruit set and retention followed by sun burning and cracking is a serious physiological disorder in litchi which is causing significant economic loss. Besides these, the pre-harvest quiescent infection with blight, anthracnose etc is also causing huge losses at post harvest stage. Considering these problems an experiment was conducted during 2010-13 to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest spray of various chemicals on fruit quality, yield and storage life of litchi fruits. Eight chemical treatments were sprayed twice on litchi fruits cv.

  • This paper presents the new numerical results of vibration response analysis of cracked FGM plate based on phase-field theory and finite element method. The stiffener is added into one surface of the structure, and it is parallel to the edges of the plate. The displacement compatibility between the stiffener and the plate is clearly indicated, so the working process of the structure is described obviously. The proposed theory and program are verified by comparing with other published papers.

  • The present paper addresses the problem for free vibration of multistep Timoshenko beams with arbitrary number of cracks, continuing the work accomplished in [28], where the problem was studied on the base of Euller-Bernoulli beam theory. First, the obtained general solution of uniform Timoshenko beam is employed to develop the TMM for modal analysis of multistep Timoshenko beam with multiple cracks. Then, effect of beam slenderness and stepped change in cross section on sensitivity of natural frequencies to cracks is thoroughly examined.

  • The method of differential quadrature is employed to analyze the free vibration of a cracked cantilever beam resting on elastic foundation. The beam is made of a functionally graded material and rests on a Winkler–Pasternak foundation. The crack action is simulated by a line spring model. Also, the differential quadrature method with a geometric mapping are applied to study the free vibration of irregular plates. The obtained results agreed with the previous studies in the literature.

  • Flaws at dissimilar metal welds (DMWs), such as reactor coolant systems components, Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM), Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) etc., in nuclear power plants have been found. Notably, primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the DMWs could cause significant reliability problems at nuclear power plants. Therefore, phased array ultrasound is widely used for inspecting surface break cracks and stress corrosion cracks in DMWs.

  • This paper briefly overviews experimental procedure and methods of self-healing studies; and the damage of concrete materials due to drying shrinkage. Microstructure observations such as SEM, ESEM are used as popular methods in self-healing researches; however, they are difficult to be carried out in case of 3D-cracks.To solve the problem, this study proposes a sampling method that makes easier to be observe the microstructure of products on surfaces of simulated cracks.
