The nature of affixing in written english

This is a continuation of the authors' paper of the same title which appeared in Volume 8 of this journal. The present part extends the authors' definitions of prefix and suffix (in written English) to corpora of three-vowel-string words, and implements them on a corpus K consisting of 19,329 graphemically distinct three-vowel-string words from the Shorter Oxford Dictionary.

In a recent paper by H. L. Resnikoff and J. L. Dolby, "The Nature of Affixing in Written English," an algorithm for the structural definition of affixes was developed and applied to data consisting of all the words of the form CVCVC in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary.

Any algorithmic study of written English must sooner or later face the problem of unscrambling English affixes. The role of affixes is crucial in the study of word-breaking practice.
