The study found that students diverted their attention from linguistic problems to other non-linguistic ones (extralinguistic issues related to extratextual features and general style conventions) after the workshops. This change led to some students’ attempts to avoid word-forword translation and produce more idiomatic translation solutions as shown in the analysis of titles. Recommendations were made on the inclusion of text analysis and problem identification in developing students’ translation skills.

The task of identifying named entities from the discussion texts in Web forums faces the challenge of noisy names. As the names are often misspelled or abbreviated, the conventional techniques have failed to detect the noisy names properly. In this paper we propose a global context based framework for handling the noisy names. The framework is tested on a named entity recognition system designed to identify the names from the discussion texts in a homeopathy diagnosis discussion forum.

In this work, all spellings and punctuation were reproduced from the original work except in the very few cases where an obvious typo occurred. These typos are corrected without comment. In the original work, monetary pounds were expressed as an italicized "l." after the number. For the text version, I am using the more conventional £100 form for clarity. In the original volumes in this set, each even-numbered page had a header consisting of the page number, the volume title, and the chapter number.

We describe a system for automatic annotation of English text in the FrameNet standard. In addition to the conventional annotation of frame elements and their semantic roles, we annotate additional semantic information such as support verbs and prepositions, aspectual markers, copular verbs, null arguments, and slot fillers. As far as we are aware, this is the first system that finds this information automatically.

This paper describes a new hardware algorithm for morpheme extraction and its implementation on a specific machine (MEX-I), as the first step toward achieving natural language parsing accelerators. It also shows the machine's performance, 100-1,000 times faster than a personal computer. This machine can extract morphemes from 10,000 character Japanese text by searching an 80,000 morpheme dictionary in I second. It can treat multiple text streams, which are composed of character candidates, as well as one text stream.

The Plant Protection Agreement for the Asia and Pacific region (APPPC) was revised between 1997 and 1999 to update and align the Agreement with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC 1997) and the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement 1995). The Agreement contains provisions referring specifically to SALB with a related appendix describing procedures for reducing the risk of introduction of SALB into the region. This paper proposes a supervised learning method for detecting a semantic relation between a given pair of named entities, which may be located in different sentences. The method employs newly introduced contextual features based on centering theory as well as conventional syntactic and word-based features.
