This work uses the finite element method for the first time to simulate the dynamic response of nanoplates resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation under the flexoelectric effect. The calculation formulas are derived from the new type of the shear deformation theory, which is a simple shear deformation theory.

In this paper, vibration of Timoshenko microbeams with an axial force in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is studied for the first time by using a nonlinear finite element procedure. Based on the von Karm´ an geometric nonlinearity and the modified couple stress theory (MCST), a beam element is formulated by employing hierarchical functions to interpolate the displacement field.

This thesis deals with the finite element simulation of spot welded joint in crash analysis. Spot welding is a very common joining process in the automotive industry. It is cost effective and it provides a very fast production rate of automotive body components. Despite this advantage, spot welds are very susceptible to various types of loading conditions. Therefore they are prone to failure, if not designed properly, during their service life time. Therefore it is very important to understand the behaviour of spot welds and their failure characteristics.

Photoelasticity images of pulsed laser ablation in water and in air were simulated by Finite Element Method. In the paper "Compare transient stress induced in in-air and in-water laser ablation using simulation method", the Von Mises stress distribution in the target is deduced from the simulated images and is compared between the two-ablation regimes. The result confirms that pulse laser ablation in the water can induced a stress about 100 times higher than that induced in ablation in the air.

Eddy currents always appear in any conduction regions of all types electrical devices, such as electrical apparatus, the cores of transformers, rotating electrical machines, which are subjected to a time-varying magnetic field variation. This leads to an increase of losses and a descrease of efficiency for electrical devices.

In this method, the internal DOFs are separated from the boundary DOFs, and decomposed onto a basis of static modes, and a basis of fixed interface modes [Craig et Bampton, 1968]. The use of a reduced basis for the fixed interface modes makes it possible to reduce the size of the system to be solved, and therefore to save the computational time compared to a classical finite element computation involving the complete system.

The finite element method (FEM) has been successful in simulating complex physical systems in science and engineering. A big challenge of using the FEM is how to reduce computation time in large-scale problems. In this paper, we propose combining the FEM and an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) technique for solving an incompressible fluid flow on unstructured grids.

In this paper, we compare two types of commonly used wheel-track interaction models for wheel-rail impact problems, i.e., a beam and a continuum finite element model. We first reveal the differences between the impact forces predicted by the two models due to a typical rail squat using a time-frequency analysis.

A non-material shell finite element model is developed and applied to the example problem of a slack steel belt moving on two rotating drums. For the first time in the open literature we demonstrate an approach for predicting the time evolution of the lateral run-off velocity of the belt in response to its geometric imperfection and angular drum misalignment.

In this article, a simplified variant for the TFEM is proposed where the shape functions similar to the ones for a (spatial) axial bar are used. The accuracy in the obtained results of some numerical examples is found to be comparable with the accuracy in the previous results.

This paper proposes an optimal design “modern” approach for servomotors. This approach consists of the optimization algorithms at the initial analytical calculations and the modelling of the virtual prototype in order to reduce the costly and time-consuming prototyping loops of the “conventional” design method. The optimal design of a servomotor for robot application is verified by using finite element analysis (FEA) in terms of torque at low to high speeds.

Lecture Finite element method: Chapter 3 - Dynamic analysis, after studying this section will help you understand: Introduction; Modal analysis; Transient analysis.A dynamic analysis is a technique used to determine the dynamic behavior of a structure or component. It is an analysis involving time, where the inertia and possibly damping of the structure play an important role.

The soil cohesion and angle of internal friction depend greatly on the soil moisture. Specifically, soil with a lower moisture content has a higher shearing strength than that in soil with higher moisture content. The finite element modeling of moisture transfers in unsaturated soils through the relationship between soil moisture, soil suction, unsaturated permeability and soilmoisture dispersivity is capable of accurately predicting the wetting front development.

In the ultimate limit state design of ship hulls, the safety and economy have the most important position in the whole design of ship structures. In this paper, ultimate strength of ship hull has been calculated by using the finite-element software. The modeling method which is suitable for ultimate strength calculation is gained. At the same time, ultimate loading capacity’s variation of series bulk carriers with length is gained.

In this paper, the technique is applied to analyze transient heat transfer problems. In order increase time efficiency, a modelreduction technique, namely the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), is employed. The idea is that a given large-size problem is projected into a small-size one which can be solved faster but still maintain the required accuracy.

In this paper, the subproblem method with using edge finite elements is proposed for coupling subproblems via several steps to treat and deal with some troubles regarding to electromagnetic problems that gets quite difficulties when directly applying a finite element method. In the strategy subproblem method, it allows a complete problem to define into several subproblems with adapted dimensions. Each subproblem can be solved on its independent domain and mesh without performing in whole domain or mesh. This easily supports meshing and decreases computing time.
