  • The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has increased in recent years and consequently they are being released into the environment. The final destination of most NPs is the aquatic environment due to washing up by rain waters. Fish (n = 120) were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 25 mg/L) of aluminum-oxide (Al2O3), copper-oxide (CuO), and titanium-dioxide (TiO2) NPs for 14 days and 14 days of depuration period (no NP in water). Following NP exposures, activities of Na,K-ATPase, Mg-ATPase, Ca-ATPase, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brain and muscle were measured.

  • Intraoperative detection of 18F-FDG-avid tissue sites during 18F-FDG-directed surgery can be very challenging when utilizing gamma detection probes that rely on a fixed target-to-background (T/B) ratio (ratiometric threshold) for determination of probe positivity.

  • Agriculture is going through a profound revolution worldwide due to increasing world demand for food, higher costs of energy and other inputs, environmental pollution problems, and instability of cropping systems. The importance of plant functioning can be realized from the facts that knowledge of mineral nutrition of plants has opened new vistas for fertilizer practices. The detection of deficiencies and toxicity of particular mineral nutrient element has enabled us to make adequate soil amendments and root nutrient absorption for better plant growth.

  • Biofilms are surface associated bacterial communities surrounded by a matrix of exopolymers. Biofilms contribute to the development of persistent infections due to their refractiveness to antibiotic therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate three methods for detection of biofilm formation in different indwelling devices.

  • A member of the TaHKT2;1 multigene family was previously identified as a Na+ transporter with a possible role in root Na+ uptake. In the present study, the existing full-length cDNA of this member was used as a basis to query the International Wheat Genome Survey Sequence to identify all members of the TaHKT2;1 family.

  • Atriplex canescens is a typical C4 secretohalophyte with salt bladders on the leaves. Accumulating excessive Na+ in tissues and salt bladders, maintaining intracellular K+ homeostasis and increasing leaf organic solutes are crucial for A. canescens survival in harsh saline environments, and enhanced photosynthetic activity and water balance promote its adaptation to salt.

  • The present investigation was carried out at Tissue Culture Laboratory of S.K.N. Agriculture University, Jobner, India during 2018-19. Experiment was laid out using completely randomized design (CRD) with ten replications. Six culture media viz. Murashige and Skoog media, Nitsch & Nitsch media, woody plant medium, Schenk and Hildebrant medium, White’s medium and Khudson solution– C were tested for direct shoot proliferation and callus induction at most responsive level of plant growth regulators in Bael (Aegle marmelos L.).

  • In many parts of the world food security is being affected due to declining quality and/or quantity of the soil resource base and climate change. In this context, farming with zeolites has drawn attention. Zeolites are natural aluminosilicates present in rocks in different part of the world. Use of zeolite has gained a momentum in the recent past owing to multitude of benefits accrued from them. Clinoptilolite Zeolites are useful in agriculture because of their large porosity, cation exchange capacity and selectivity for ammonium and potassium cations.

  • The present investigation aimed at evaluating the seasonality of macro-nutrients contents of pear trees during the agriculture year 2007. Therefore, leaf samples were collected at fortnightly intervals form 1st may to 1st October and evaluated for nutrients. In general concentration of N, P,K decreased and those of Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn content increased from first to last sampling date while as no conspicuous trend was observed in Cu content of leaves. The distinct period of stability for N, Mg, Mn and Zn contents occurred from July 15- August 15.

  • Human corneal endothelial cells have two major functions: barrier function mediated by proteins such as ZO-1 and pump function mediated by Na-K-ATPase which help to maintain visual function. However, human corneal endothelial cells are notorious for their limited proliferative capability in vivo and are therefore prone to corneal endothelial dysfunction that eventually may lead to blindness.

  • A Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based classification technique is employed for a quantitative global assessment of brain tissue changes by using pixel intensities and contrast generated by b-values in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A hemisphere approach is also proposed. A GMM identifies the variability in the main brain tissues at a macroscopic scale rather than searching for tumours or affected areas. The asymmetries of the mixture distributions between the hemispheres could be used as a sensitive, faster tool for early diagnosis.

  • Palytoxin stimulated a cation-dependent short-circuit cur-rent (Isc) in rat distal and proximal colon in a concen-tration-dependent fashion when applied to the mucosal surface of the tissue. The distal colon exhibited a higher sensitivity to the toxin. The palytoxin-induced Isc was blocked by vanadate but was resistant to ouabain or scilliroside, suggesting the conversion of a vanadate-sen-sitive H + /K + -ATPase into an electrogenic cation trans-porter.

  • Little is known about the functions of DNA polymerasek (Pol k) recently identified in mammals. From the genomic sequence information of rice andArabidopsis, we found that Polkmay be the only member of the X-family in higher plants. We have succeeded in isolating the cDNA and recombinant protein of Polkin a higher plant, rice (Oryza sativaL. cv. Nipponbare) (OsPolk). OsPolkhad activities of DNA polymerase, terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl trans-ferase and deoxyribose phosphate lyase, a marker enzyme for base excision repair. ...

  • A ‘textbook’ plant typically comprises about 85% water and 13.5% carbohy- drates. The remaining fraction contains at least 14 mineral elements, without which plants would be unable to complete their life cycles. These essential mineral elements include six macronutrients – N, K, P, S, Mg and Ca – which are present in relatively large amounts in plant tissues (mg g−1 of dry tissue), and several micronutrients, including Fe and Zn, which are present in smaller amounts (µg g−1 of dry tissue).

  • In routine histopathology, most tissues are fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin for long-term preservation. DNA can be extracted from these tissues for subsequent molecular analysis by amplification methods. We describe herein a protocol for DNA preparation from paraffin-embedded tissues based on published procedures (1–3). In brief, tissue sections are placed into microfuge tubes, then deparaffinized with xylene. The xylene is removed with ethanol washes, and the tissue is treated with proteinase K to make DNA available for amplification....

  • The algorithm of K-means clustering was employed to mainly classify the results of region segmentation in the previous stage. The brain MR images were classified into three categories, respectively GM, WM, and CSF. Because there were many fragmentary regions, it was necessary to classify all the regions, in which all the regions were divided into three categories, it was assumed that K=3, and the region was regarded as a unit to conduct the algorithm of K-means clustering.
