This interpretive study explores foreign accounting academics’ understanding of their cultural intelligence through individual interviews and a CQS survey. Using the theoretical framework of CQ, comprising of metacognitive, cognitive, motivational and behavioural dimensions, this research examines the perceptions, experiences and skills of accounting academics teaching full-time in a branch campus in Vietnam.

Whilst the level of CQ and the factors that influence CQ have been investigated among business students, it has not been applied to the academics responsible for their education. In the context of CQ, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the capacity or preparedness of university academics to deal with the increasing phenomenon of multiculturalism in the classroom. This research addressed this gap through an examination of the level of CQ exhibited by Australian accounting academics.

In the contemporary global academic environment, internationalization of higher education has become a common trend in both developed and developing countries. In Vietnam, a developing country in Asia, initiatives such as branch campus, transnational collaborative arrangements, sandwich programs, English-medium programs and degrees have been put in place as part of higher education internationalization. This has created both opportunities and challenges for the development of the Vietnamese higher education system.

During the last decades, Joint Programs, a model of transnational higher education, have enjoyed tremendous increase Vietnam. In this model, all the curricula, textbooks and other teaching materials are provided by foreign partners; all subjects are taught fully in foreign languages; foreign lecturers teach a part of the academic programs; the domestic lecturers are recommended by the local institutions but must be approved by the partner universities.
