Transplanted rice
-
Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world and mainly cultivated in paddy feld by transplanting seedlings. However, increasing water scarcity due to climate change, labor cost for transplanting, and competition from urbanization is making this traditional method of rice production unsustainable in the long term.

Wet direct-seeded rice is a possible alternative to conventional puddled transplanted rice; the former uses less water and reduces labor requirements. Improving seed reserve utilization efficiency (SRUE) is a key factor in facilitating the application of this technology.

Due to the diversity of rice varieties and cropping systems in China, the limitation of seeding density and seedling quality makes it hard to improve machine-transplanted efficiency. Previous studies have shown that indica and japonica varieties varied in machine transplanting efficiency and optimal seeding density.

The sensitivity of rice to high temperature varies with growth phase, an increase in day/night temperature and genotype (Yoshida et al., 1981). Planning and execution of any breeding program for improvement on quantitative traits depends on magnitude of genetic variability.

The experiment was done during kharif season 2016 at farmer field in Bhadohi district near Varanasi to ascertain the validity of developed fertilizer adjustment equations based on Soil Test Crop Response for targeted yield of this crop. These equations were compared with other fertilizer use practices such as farmer’s practice and general recommendation. Fertilizer doses for different crop under STCR based fertilizers application treatment were calculated using fertilizer adjustment equations for targeted yield of different crops. The percent increase in yield ware 17.11 and 37.

The inductive response of H2O2 scavenging enzymes was studied in leaves of twenty rice cultivars when the plants were exposed to elevated temperature 55 days after transplanting (DAT). High temperature stress preferentially enhance the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and non-specific oxidase (POX), catalase (CAT) activity decreased with continuous exposure to heat stress although it was higher than control upto 15 days of stress (DAS) treatment.

Rice is commonly grown by transplanting one month-old seedlings into puddled and continuously flooded soil which leads to higher losses of water through puddling, surface evaporation and percolation. Excessive pumping of water for puddling causes problems of declining water table and poor quality water for irrigation.

Increasing farm labor scarcity and depletion of natural resources such as water are posing threats to the sustainability of traditional Puddled Transplanted Rice (PTR) system in Eastern India. Dry-seeded rice (DSR) or Non-Puddled Transplanted Rice (NPTR) could be used as an alternative to PTR.
