This study presents web handling systems with the characteristic of a changing moment of inertia and operating radius of rolls. Commonly, sliding mode control (SMC) is used to control the web tension of this system due to its robustness against modeling imprecision.

This research focuses on the observer-based controller of a balancing robot. Firstly, the dynamic model of the robot is inferred. The uncertainty of the model parameters is then introduced as constraints in state space. Practically, it is very difficult to measure state variables as velocity and acceleration.

The proposal presents the design of a voltage con-troller for a three-phase inverter. At first, the state-space model of the inverter with uncertainties and system pa-rameters variation taken into account is constructed. The proposed controller combines a feedback component and a disturbance compensator. The first one is accomplished using LQR control law which can be approximated by reinforcement learning algorithm.

This study aims to evaluate the potential for “Containment Bypass” in VVER/V320 reactor during extended Station Blackout (SBO) scenarios that challenge the tubes by primarily involving a natural circulation of superheated steam inside the piping loop and then induce creep rupture tube failure. Assessments are made of SCDAP/RELAP5 code capabilities for predicting the plant behavior during an SBO event and estimates are made of the uncertainties associated with the SCDAP/RELAP5 predictions for key fluid and components condition and for the SG tube failure margins.

This paper is devoted to the problem of uncertainty in fractional-order Chaotic systems implemented by means of standard electronic components. The fractional order element (FOE) is typically substituted by one complex impedance network containing a huge number of discrete resistors and capacitors. In order to balance the complexity and accuracy of the circuit, a sparse optimization based parameter selection method is proposed.

– This paper uses the dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model and calibrates a version of the Carlstrom and Fuerst’s (1997) agency cost model of business cycles with timevarying uncertainty in the technology shocks that affect capital production. To highlight the differences between the US and European financial sectors, the paper focuses on two key components of the lending channel: the risk premium associated with bank loans and the bankruptcy rates.

Construction of low-income housing projects is a replicated process and is associated with uncertainties that arise from the unavailability of resources. Government agencies and/or contractors have to select a construction system that meets low-income housing projects constraints including project conditions, technical, financial and time constraints. This research presents a framework, using computer simulation, which aids government authorities and contractors in the planning of low-income housing projects.

The effects of uncertainty factors on SIFs were deducted from sensitivity analyses and, based on the similarity and conservatism compared with detailed finite element analysis results, the R6 code, taking into account the applied internal pressure and combination of stress components, was recommended as the optimum procedure for SIF estimation.

In this paper, Lagrange formula is employed with the purpose of modelling both the kinematics and dynamics of a nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot (WMR) subject to unknown wheel slips, model uncertainties such as unstructured unmodelled dynamic components, and unknown external disturbances such as unknown external forces. Afterwards, an adaptive tracking controller based on a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) with an online weight tuning algorithm is proposed for tracking a predefined trajectory.

This research monograph concerns the design and analysis of discrete-time approximations for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by Wiener processes and Poisson processes or Poisson jump measures. In financial and actuarial modeling and other areas of application, such jump diffusions are often used to describe the dynamics of various state variables. In finance these may represent, for instance, asset prices, credit ratings, stock indices, interest rates, exchange rates or commodity prices.

Moreover, we will present estimates for different scenarios – of slow and rapid adoption of the new technology – that should cover the range of possible out- comes with a good approximation. Third and last, our approach neglects some of the positive effects exerted by the introduction of cloud computing, mainly the cre- ation of new network effects and the positive externalities due to energy savings. Their consideration would be subject to excessive uncertainty, but because of this we can look at our estimates of the impact of cloud computing on the economy as conservative estimates.

I have been associated with uncertainty calculations for quite sometime. Asia Metrology Program (APMP) took interest in unification of expressing the measurement results along with uncertainty. In those days the uncertainty components were divided according to source of errors. The errors were named as random and systematic errors. Hence components of uncertainty were named random uncertainty and systematic uncertainty. Around 1980, BIPM took initiative by circulating questioners to the countries who were members of Metre Convention.

In this special feature, we examine how expected equity returns vary across a sample of globally active banks and over time in 11 countries. We estimate the determinants of the rate of return on bank stocks using a standard equity pricing framework that decomposes share price risk into a systematic and an idiosyncratic component. The systematic component cannot be diversified away, and it is priced in the market in the sense of commanding higher expected returns.

In a world of geo-political, social and economic uncertainty, strategic financial management is in a process of change, which requires a reassessment of the fundamental assumptions that cut across the traditional boundaries of the subject. Read on and you will not only appreciate the major components of contemporary finance but also find the subject much more accessible for future reference.

While insurance Exchanges have the potential to transform the health insurance market for consumers, many large employers anticipate health benei ts will remain a core component of the value proposition for active employees beyond 2014. As Figure 11 shows, 90% of companies indicate that will be the case in 2014 and beyond — virtually unchanged from 2012.

At the same time, employees continue to face a growing affordability gap as their out-of-pocket health care costs rise at a higher rate than their income and the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and it becomes more difi cult to save for retirement. Amid the political, legislative and judicial uncertainty, most employers are steadfast in their commitment to keeping active health care benei ts as a central component of their employee value proposition.

This book is dedicated to the many students we have taught over the years, whose thought-provoking questions led us to rethink what we had learned as graduate students. For all such questioning minds, we offer the research efforts of scholars around the world who have come to the conclusion that uncertainty can be decomposed into a risk component and a reward component; that all uncertainty is not bad.
