This paper describes an implementation of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) which has been adapted for the purposes of teaching health professional students, including medical and nursing students. Off-the-shelf EMR software, while suited for physicians in practice settings does not completely satisfy the needs of these students and educators. There are many unique requirements of a teaching EMR compared to one used in a production environment.

Starch- and plant-protein-based glues, for example, do not have the strength of petrochemical-derived superglues. On the other hand, plant-derived chemicals have unique advantages for other uses. Recombinant proteins, for example, can be designed and produced in plants to provide tissue glues analogous to the fibrinogen that naturally forms around a flesh wound. Emerging technologies offer dramatic new capabilities to alter plant metabolic pathways, opening up unprecedented opportunities to produce high-value chemicals from renewable resources....

TheRel/NF-jBfamilyof transcription factorsplaykey roles in morphogenesis and immune responses. We reported previously that As-rel1 and As-rel2 of the ascidianHalo-cynthia roretziare involved in notochord formation. The As-rel1 protein is a typical Rel/NF-jB family member, whereas the As-rel2 protein is a novel truncated product of As-rel1 that lacks a nuclear localization signal and the unique C-terminal region. Here, we present conclusive evi-dence that As-rel1 and As-rel2 are generated from a single gene by alternative splicing....

The urea cycle enzyme arginase (EC 3.5.3.1) hydrolyzes L-arginine to L-ornithine and urea. Mammalian arginases require manganese, have a highly alkaline pH optimum and are resistant to reducing agents. The gastric human pathogen,Helicobacter pylori, also has a complete urea cycle and contains therocFgene encoding arginase (RocF), which is involved in the pathogenesis ofH. pyloriinfection. Its arginase is specifically involved in acid resistance and inhibits host nitric oxide production.

This book was conceived more than 5 years ago. Its production was a labor of love and a program of persistence. In our roles as educators of physician assistant students, we recognized that a textbook discussing ethics and professionalism focused specifically for PA students would be helpful to both them and their educators. Physician assistants are unique health-care professionals in many ways. During the beginning years of the profession, typical PA students had a significant amount of health-care experience; many of them were military corpsmen and medics.
