Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and marketing in many settings across sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have systematically sought to assess alcohol marketing exposure, particularly in vulnerable areas such as urban slums where alcohol is often highly prevalent but where educational programs and alcohol prevention messages are scarce.

In Nigeria, many young girls are engaged in commercial sex work as a means of livelihood and support of dependent relatives. Although studies have documented some of the violence related issues among commercial sex workers, the plight of adolescent and young sex workers particularly in urban slums may be different in context and depth.

In this article we address this issue, using the SDGs as a framework to evaluate how policies and plans for local energy access can be coordinated with all SDG Targets. With a case study in Kibera, Kenya, we analyse how local energy access could enable or inhibit all local SDG Targets.

Malnutrition continues to be a critical public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. For example, in East Africa, 48 % of children under-five are stunted while 36 % are underweight. Poor health and poor nutrition are now more a characteristic of children living in the urban areas than of children in the rural areas.

There is considerable evidence that health systems, in so far as they ensure access to healthcare, promote population health even independent of other determinants. Access to child health services remains integral to improving child health outcomes.

Past research provides strong evidence that adverse life events heighten the risk of delinquent behavior among adolescents. Urban informal (slum) settlements in sub-Saharan Africa are marked by extreme adversity. However, the prevalence and consequences of adverse life events as well as protective factors that can mitigate the effects of exposure to these events in slum settlements is largely understudied.

Reducing Poverty and Improving the Environment and Citizen Health in Brazil Favelas (slums) are a primary feature of urban development in Brazil. These informal settlements often occupy environmentally precarious areas such as steep hillsides and riverbanks, and usually lack key infrastructure, in particular sanitation and sewerage systems. This has resulted in increased rates of disease and mortality. Brazil has, however, made significant steps in addressing the problems which beset the favelas.

6% (compared to national average around 2%). A major consequence of the surge in urban population is the rapid growth of slums and squatter settlements. While the urban poor population is not confined to slums, these do present an aggregation of the poorest section of the urban population. Due to overcrowded, unsanitary and sub-standard dwellings, then are thus at high risk of contracting communicable diseases.

Given that the adverse affects of climate change on agriculture are expected to burden poor countries disproportionately, and their rural poor in particular, Bolivia is especially vulnerable as it is the poorest country in South America with at least 70% of the rural population living in poverty and more than a third of rural Bolivians living in extreme poverty. Those citizens who have been displaced by natural disasters in rural areas often remain at risk in urban areas as shantytowns and slums are frequently situated on land prone to flooding or landslide.

The action of the wind on dry loose soil surfaces leads to particles blowing into the air. Factors favouring the suspension of soil dust particles into the atmosphere are an exposed dry surface of fine soil and a high wind speed. In towns and cities, the areas of exposed soil, particularly in town centres, are rather small. However, there are considerable quantities of dusts on road and pavement surfaces which arise from ingress of soil on vehicle tyres and from the atmosphere, the erosion of the road surface itself and degradation of parts of the vehicle, especially the tyres.

The report highlights the best practices from five successful microfinance institutions in Africa. While they are all different in how and where they operate, they are among the most successful microfinance institutions in Africa and share some common traits. They know their clients – the poor in urban slums or in hard-to-reach rural areas – and have tailored their operations to reach them where they live and offer the most appropriate services. They reach their clients by public buses in South Africa, motor scooters in Togo and banks-on-wheels in Mozambique.

We did not identify any prospective cohort studies, which would be the strongest study design to assess this question of risk. Consequently, our conclusions are tempered by the limited available evidence. Based on these data, gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable band seem to confer minimal if any risk for nutrient problems, as long as maternal nutrition is maintained.

Immunization Immunizations are one of the most important tools we have to protect children from a wide range of diseases, including polio, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, tetanus, diph- theria, and pertussis. Without immunizations, a much larger number of children in North America would die each year or live with the chronic effects of these diseases. Immunization coverage can also be an indicator of access to primary health care.
