  • Urban sprawl is an international phenomenon happening principally in quickly developing areas. A study on the spatiotemporal features of urban sprawl is useful for the sustainable land management, landscape and urban land planning. The present research explores the trends, types and changes of landscape of urban sprawl in the context of a rapid urbanization process in Pleiku city and in the Central Highland of Viet Nam from 2000 to 2019. The results show the expansion of the Pleiku city has witnessed a fluctuation in its land uses through two decades.

These comprise poor air quality, traffic volumes and congestion, high levels of ambient noise and scarcity of quiet areas as sport, play and recreational areas, neglect of the built environment, high level of greenhouse gas emissions, urban sprawl and generation of large volumes of waste and waste water.

  • For example, adding an urban highway lane typically accommodates about 2,000 additional daily vehicle trips. 2 Although this reduces congestion on that roadway (at least temporarily, until generated traffic fills the capacity), it often increases “downstream” surface street traffic congestion, increases parking demand, requires travelers to own and operate automobiles, and if additional vehicle travel is induced it increases accidents, energy consumption, pollution and sprawl, all costs that could be reduced if the same trips are made by alternative modes.

  • For this analysis it is useful to distinguish between roadway rehabilitation and expansion projects (Troth 2009). There is little controversy concerning the value of basic roadway rehabilitation, sometimes called fix it first (NGA 2004) or asset management (“Asset Management,” VTPI 2008). However, there is growing debate over the value of urban highway expansion (new road links, additional traffic lanes, expanded intersections, etc.) because they tend to induce additional vehicle travel and stimulate more dispersed, automobile-oriented land use development (sprawl). ...

  • A groundbreaking study of urban sprawl in Calgary, "Expansive Discourses" looks at the city’s development after the Second World War. The interactions of land developers and the local government influenced how the pattern grew: developers met market demands and optimized profits by building houses as efficiently as possible, while the city had to consider wider planning constraints and infrastructure costs. In "Expansive Discourses", Foran examines the complexity of their debates from a historical perspective, why each party acted as it did, and where each can be criticized....

  • Recent developments in pest-borne diseases, such as cases of West Nile fever in the United States of America and the spread of Lyme disease in both Europe and North America, have signalled strongly the crucial need to carefully assess the potential threat of urban pests to public and environmental health. Also, modern living conditions, urban sprawl and emerging changes in climate make the spread of pests and pest-borne diseases increa- singly likely. The effects of these conditions and changes need to be properly monitored and understood.
