  • (1) Since the simpler model features less regressor than the larger model, it follows that the VIF of the simpler model will be less than that of the larger model. The reason is that the more variables we include in the model, the greater multicollinearity, and, hence, the greater Rj 2 , unless the omitted variables happen to be orthogonal to the regressors included in the simpler model. The simpler model, which omits relevant variables, produces bias estimates but with smaller variances. Consequently, there appears to be a tradeoff between bias and precision. ...

  • The literature concerning the application of statistics to linguistic problems and in particular to mechanical translation is reviewed. The conclusion is that much of the work done is of little direct use for mechanical translation, and that some of it is based on a misapprehension of what statistical techniques can in fact do.

  • The present study has been conducted in one of the five natural vegetation fragments at the Expe-rimental Farm Edgardia, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. In the past the forest fragment su f-fered disturbances due to the selective exploitation of tree species and the use of part of the su r-face as pasture. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the structure and the dynamics of natural vegetation. Three phytosociological surveys (2006, 2010 and 2014) were carried out in a sampled area of one hectare.

  • We describe a statistical technique for assigning senses to words. An instance of a word is assigned a sense by asking a question about the context in which the word appears. The question is constructed to have high mutual information with the translation of that instance in another language. When we incorporated this method of assigning senses into our statistical machine translation system, the error rate of the system decreased by thirteen percent. language model does not realize that take my own decision is improbable because take and decision no longer fall within a single trigram. ...

  • In this paper we describe a statistical technique for aligning sentences with their translations in two parallel corpora. In addition to certain anchor points that are available in our da.ta, the only information about the sentences that we use for calculating alignments is the number of tokens that they contain. Because we make no use of the lexical details of the sentence, the alignment computation is fast and therefore practical for application to very large collections of text.

  • This paper describes a system that leads us to believe in the feasibility of constructing natural spoken dialogue systems in task-oriented domains. It specifically addresses the issue of robust interpretation of speech in the presence of recognition errors. Robustness is achieved by a combination of statistical error post-correction, syntactically- and semantically-driven robust parsing, and extensive use of the dialogue context.

  • Timolol maleate (TiM), a nonselective b-adrenergic blocker, is a potent highly effective agent for management of hypertension. The drug suffers from extensive first pass effect, resulting in a reduction of oral bioavailability (F%) to 50% and a short elimination half-life of 4 h; parameters necessitating its frequent administration. The current study was therefore, designed to formulate and optimize the transfersomal TiM gel for transdermal delivery.

  • The study was conducted in Junagadh and Porbandar districts of Gujarat to compare breeding, calf and health management practices opted by buffalo owners (n=300). Majority of farmers practiced natural service (59%), late heat for insemination (76.34%), pregnancy diagnosis (90%) and treatment of anoestrous/repeaters buffaloes (90.33%). Most of respondents attended calving and took care of calves after parturition (98%) and cleaned calves (93.67%). However, few farmers practiced ligation/ cutting and disinfection of navel cord (14.33%) and feeding colostrum to calf (33.33%).

  • An experiment was undertaken by utilizing forty five Niger genotypes for twelve yield and yield contributing characters to assess genetic divergence. The analysis of variance has shown that there was significant variation among the genotypes in all the traits. The multivariate analysis carried out using MahalanobisD2 -statistics, indicated wider genetic diversity in the genotypes of niger.

  • This paper addresses all these issues by measuring the impact of luck on mutual fund performance. Specifically, we use the False Discovery Rate (F DR) introduced by Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) in the statistical literature—the F DR measures the proportion of lucky funds among the significant funds. We extend this methodology by developing a new approach which allows us to separately compute the F DR among funds with significant positive estimated alphas (called hereafter the best funds) and funds with significant negative estimated alphas (called hereafter the worst funds).

  • Unsupervised word alignment is most often modeled as a Markov process that generates a sentence f conditioned on its translation e. A similar model generating e from f will make different alignment predictions. Statistical machine translation systems combine the predictions of two directional models, typically using heuristic combination procedures like grow-diag-final. This paper presents a graphical model that embeds two directional aligners into a single model.

  • This paper studies transliteration alignment, its evaluation metrics and applications. We propose a new evaluation metric, alignment entropy, grounded on the information theory, to evaluate the alignment quality without the need for the gold standard reference and compare the metric with F -score. We study the use of phonological features and affinity statistics for transliteration alignment at phoneme and grapheme levels. The experiments show that better alignment consistently leads to more accurate transliteration.
