  • The job description is to the job what the foundation is to the house. Every structure begins at the bottom with a strong foundation on which to build. Like a structure’s foundation, a wellwritten job description can be used as the basis to establish and build the expectations of the job. When writing a job description you lay the groundwork for a particular job and for your relationship with the person you hire to do the work.

  • Toss your keys along the floor, they’ll skitter along for a bit as friction does negative work on them, reducing their kinetic. Quickly, the keys come to rest, and the kinetic energy you gave them is gone. But in this case they can’t turn around (as they did when you picked them up), gather speed from the same frictional force that acted to slow them, and jump back into your hand with the same kinetic energy. Once the motion stops, the friction stops, and it can not restore the kinetic energy of the keys as gravity is able to...

  • Electric charge and a measure for the quantity of charge Any household electrical appliance – be it a light bulb, a motor, or a television set – has two contacts which have to be plugged in to get the device to operate. This common characteristic, that an electrical apparatus must have two wires connecting it to a source of electricity, gave the rise in the eighteenth century to the idea that when an electrical device is working, something is moving through it. That something is called electric charge. When you pull out a plug, turn off a switch, or disconnect...

  • To resolve or not to resolve, that is the structural ambiguity dilemma. The traditional wisdom is to disambiguate only when it matters in terms of the meaning of the utterance, and to do so using the computationally least costly information. NLP work on PP-attachment has followed this wisdom, and much effort has been focused on formulating structural and lexical strategies for resolving noun-phrase and verb-phrase (NP-PP vs. VP-PP) attachment ambiguity (e.g. [8, 11]).

  • While various aspects of syntactic structure have been shown to bear on the determination of phraselevel prosody, the text-to-speech field has lacked a robust working system to test the possible relations between syntax and prosody. We describe an implemented system which uses the deterministic parser Fidditch to create the input for a set of prosody rules.

  • Several attempts have been made to learn phrase translation probabilities for phrasebased statistical machine translation that go beyond pure counting of phrases in word-aligned training data. Most approaches report problems with overfitting. We describe a novel leavingone-out approach to prevent over-fitting that allows us to train phrase models that show improved translation performance on the WMT08 Europarl German-English task.

  • The task of aligning corresponding phrases across two related sentences is an important component of approaches for natural language problems such as textual inference, paraphrase detection and text-to-text generation. In this work, we examine a state-of-the-art structured prediction model for the alignment task which uses a phrase-based representation and is forced to decode alignments using an approximate search approach.

  • Determining the relationship between the intonational characteristics of an utterance and other features inferable from its text is important both for speech recognition and for speech synthesis. This work investigates the use of text analysis in predicting the location of intonational phrase boundaries in natural speech, through analyzing 298 utterances from the DARPA Air Travel Information Service database. For statistical modeling, we employ Classification and Regression Tree (CART) techniques. ...

  • Previous work using topic model for statistical machine translation (SMT) explore topic information at the word level. However, SMT has been advanced from word-based paradigm to phrase/rule-based paradigm. We therefore propose a topic similarity model to exploit topic information at the synchronous rule level for hierarchical phrase-based translation.

  • We propose an improved, bottom-up method for converting CCG derivations into PTB-style phrase structure trees. In contrast with past work (Clark and Curran, 2009), which used simple transductions on category pairs, our approach uses richer transductions attached to single categories. Our conversion preserves more sentences under round-trip conversion (51.1% vs. 39.6%) and is more robust.

  • In this work, the problem of extracting phrase translation is formulated as an information retrieval process implemented with a log-linear model aiming for a balanced precision and recall. We present a generic phrase training algorithm which is parameterized with feature functions and can be optimized jointly with the translation engine to directly maximize the end-to-end system performance. Multiple data-driven feature functions are proposed to capture the quality and confidence of phrases and phrase pairs.

  • In terms of managing the one-on-one sessions, some pre-service teachers felt that it was necessary to spend the entire meeting discussing a single problematic word or phrase. These cases were usually handled by a discussion of the use of the word or phrase and the teacher’s suggestions for alternative expressions.

  • We present a series of experiments on automatically identifying the sense of implicit discourse relations, i.e. relations that are not marked with a discourse connective such as “but” or “because”. We work with a corpus of implicit relations present in newspaper text and report results on a test set that is representative of the naturally occurring distribution of senses. We use several linguistically informed features, including polarity tags, Levin verb classes, length of verb phrases, modality, context, and lexical features. ...

  • Corpus-based grammar induction generally relies on hand-parsed training data to learn the structure of the language. Unfortunately, the cost of building large annotated corpora is prohibitively expensive. This work aims to improve the induction strategy when there are few labels in the training data. We show that the most informative linguistic constituents are the higher nodes in the parse trees, typically denoting complex noun phrases and sentential clauses. They account for only 20% of all constituents. ...
