A study was conducted to assess the Performance of Different Breeds which includes Gramapriya, TANUVAS Aseel and Srinidhi under Backyard Poultry farming System in Erode district by covering 30 backyard poultry farmers in T.N.Palayam, Gobi and Anthiyur block of Erode district, Tamil Nadu. Information was obtained on mean body weight at various ages, age at first egg, annual egg production and mortality rate. The result indicated that Gramapriya showed better annual egg production and Srinidhi gained better body weight at 20 th week when compared to other strains.

The level of mycotoxin fumonisin B1 in maize kernels, poultry and livestock feeds collected from various parts of Tamil Nadu, India has been analyzed using High performance Liquid Chromatographic coupled with evaporative light scattering detector (HPLC-ELSD). A total of 41 Maize samples (21 pre and Post-harvest maize kernels, 12 Poultry feeds and 8 livestock feeds) obtained from field, Poultry farm and retail shops. Microorganisms from dusts of organic origin was identified from some saw mill, (Site 1) and a poultry farm (Site 1) in Port Harcourt. The exposure to these organic dusts by people employed in these establishments over a long period of time can lead to occupational health diseases especially in immune compromised persons. A total of 60 Salmonella isolates (43 poultry origin, 17 farm animal origin) received from various parts of the country were used in the current study. The objective is to study the biofilm forming potential of the isolates using microtitre plate assay. Study revealed that 38% of the isolates were moderate biofilm producers and 37% were strong biofilm formers. As biofilm contribute to virulence and antimicrobial resistance of the organism, the study remains significant in food safety aspect.

As will be seen later, the commercial farms are the prime focus of the current analysis, as few scavenging birds are likely to have direct grain-feed requirements. The data on current poultry production system, generated by the field surveys, have been used. The data on various aspects such as feeding practices, feed requirements and farm size by type, collected from the surveys by Quasem (2001), have been used. A rapid market survey including a few key-informant interviews was also conducted.
