Despite tremendous advances in treatment, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a disease with high mortality (42-48%). Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is often used as a last treatment option, which poses complex problems for the treatment team, especially with prolonged ECMO support.

There is a lack of studies comparing PCT, CRP and WBC levels in the differential diagnosis of acute bacterial, viral, and mycoplasmal respiratory tract infections. It is necessary to explore the correlation between above markers and different types of ARTI.

Acute bronchitis is one of the most prevalent respiratory infections in primary care, and in more than 90% of the cases antibiotics are prescribed, mainly when purulent expectoration is present. However, this process is usually viral in origin and the benefits of antibiotic treatment are marginal.

Until recently, lung transplantation was not considered in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV seropositive patients with suppressed viral loads can now expect long-term survival with the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART); however, HIV remains a relative contraindication to lung transplantation.

Immunocompromised patients, particularly after lung transplantation, are at high risk to develop atypical forms of pulmonary infections including influenza A/H1N1. Acute Fibrinous and Organizing Pneumonia (AFOP) is a special histological pattern in acute respiratory failure with high mortality.

The role of mixed pneumonia (virus + bacteria) in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) has been described in recent years. However, it is not known whether the systemic inflammatory profile is different compared to monomicrobial CAP.

Viral pathogens were more commonly reported than previously estimated in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients. However, the real role of virus was still controversial. Consecutive adult patients with CAP between April and December, 2009 were prospectively enrolled.

Differentiating bacterial from viral pneumonia is important for guiding targeted management and judicious use of antibiotics. We assessed if clinical characteristics and blood inflammatory biomarkers could be used to distinguish bacterial from viral pneumonia.

In this study, we evaluated the lipocalin-2 (LIP2) and syndecan-4 (SYN4) levels in children who were hospitalized for radiologically confirmed CAP in order to differentiate bacterial from viral infection. The results regarding the LIP2 and SYN4 diagnostic outcomes were compared with the white blood cell (WBC) count and C reactive protein (CRP) levels.

Prolonged and difficult weaning is associated with higher rates of complications and mortality. Therefore, it is important to identify the associated factors. Case presentation: We describe our experience with a 37-year-old man diagnosed with severe viral pneumonia (influenza A).

Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is associated with infective triggers including bacterial or viral in many cases, and pneumonia is a major contributor to hospitalization for AECOPD and has a close relationship with poor outcomes. Increased delta neutrophil index (DNI) can be useful in the detection of COPD patients with pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) requires urgent and specific antimicrobial therapy. However, the causal pathogen is typically unknown at the point when anti-infective therapeutics must be initiated. Physicians synthesize information from diverse data streams to make appropriate decisions.

Hospital-acquired infection (HAI) is a growing problem all around the world particularly for countries with aging and high-density population such as Vietnam. In this review, we summarized the current status of HAIs in Vietnam regarding types of infection, rates of infection, hospital-stay duration and cost of treatment, and provided an overview with suggestions on strategies in combating these infections especially in Vietnamese settings. From quite dispersed and varied data reported in English and Vietnamese, we have seen HAI rates of less than 10%.

Acute viral respiratory exacerbation is one of the most common conditions encountered in a paediatric emergency department (PED) during winter months. We aimed at defining clinical predictors of chest radiography prescription and radiographic abnormalities, among infants with bronchiolitis in a paediatric emergency department.

Contagious pustular dermatitis (CPD) is an acute, highly contagious, zoonotic, debilitating and economically important viral non-systematic eruptive skin disease of small ruminants. In this report, occurrence of atypical caprine contagious pustular dermatitis associated with pneumonia in a goat flock is described. An outbreak of pox like disease was noticed in four out of 18 non-descript goats during June 2018, in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Affected animals showed multiple, discrete, edematous nodular lesions and crust formation throughout its body surface with respiratory symptoms.
