We report the cloning and functional charaterization of the full-length cDNA and gene encoding a Toxoplasma gondii DNA repair enzyme designated TgDRE. The gene is composed of three exons separated by two introns of 780 and 630 bp, and encodes a protein with a predicted molecular mass of 49.6 kDa. The native TgDRE protein, with a molecular mass of 60 kDa, is only detected in the virulent tachyzoite stage of T. gondii. However, the transcript is present in both asexual parasite stages, virulent tachyzoite and avirulent encysted bradyzoite. ...

Previously, a phase-variable epitope was detected in the virulent wild-type strain RC1 of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 subgroup OLDA using a lipopolysaccharide-speci®c monoclonal antibody, mAb 2625 [LuÈneberg, E., ZaÈhringer,U.,Knirel,Y.A., Steinmann,D.,Hartmann,M., Steinmetz, I., Rohde, M., Kohl, J. & Frosch, M. (1998) J. Exp. Med.188, 49±60]. In the present study, an isogenic mutant strain, termed 5215, was constructed by deletion of genes involved in the biosynthesis of the mAb 2625 epitope....

TheCPBgenes of the protozoan parasiteLeishmania mex-icana encode stage-regulated cathepsin L-like cysteine pro-teases that are important virulence factors and are in a tandem array of 19 genes. In this study, we have compared the substrate preferences of two CPB isoforms, CPB2.8 and CPB3, and a H84Y mutant of the latter enzyme, to analyse the roles played by the few amino acid differences between the isoenzymes in determining substrate specificity. CPB3 differs fromCPB2.8 at just three residues (N60D,D61Nand D64S) in the mature domain. ...

Horizontal gene transfer has been a major force for genome plasticity over evolutionary history, and is largely responsible for fitness-enhancing traits, including antibiotic resistance and virulence factors. In particular, for adap-tation of prokaryotes to extreme environments, lateral gene transfer seems to have played a crucial role.

Aspergillus fumigatusis an important human fungal pathogen. The Asper-gillus fumigatus genome contains 14 nonribosomal peptide synthetase genes, potentially responsible for generating metabolites that contribute to organismal virulence. Differential expression of the nonribosomal peptide synthetase gene,pes1, in four strains of Aspergillus fumigatuswas observed.

Bacillus cereusis an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium closely related to Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax in mammals. A significant portion of theB. cereuschromosomal genes are common to B. anthracis, including genes which in B. anthraciscode for putative virulence and sur-face proteins.

Báo cáo khoa học: The effect of hfq on global gene expression and virulence in Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Hfq is an RNA chaperone that functions as a pleiotropic regulator for RNA metabolism in bacteria. In several pathogenic bacteria, Hfq contrib-utes indirectly to virulence by binding to riboregulators that modulate the stability or translation efficiency of RNA transcripts. To characterize the role of Hfq in the pathogenicity ofNeisseria gonorrhoeae, we generated an N. gonorrhoeae hfqmutant.
