Water logging tolerant

Sixteen sugarcane clones including two checks were planted with three replications in RBD at Paddy Block, RAU Pusa Farm, Samastipur, Bihar during 2012-13 under low land area where its grand growth phase coincides with water-stagnation depth 40-45 cm for three months to study the genetic divergence in sugarcane under Water-Logging condition and identification of tolerant Clones.

The present investigation was conducted during two consecutive years 2012 and 2013 to understand the possible mechanism of salinity tolerance to wheat under water logging condition. Fifteen genotypes of wheat were screened on the basis of survival of the seedling kept under water logging for 10 days in sodic field. Five centimeter deep water logging was created for ten days at 30-day stage of seedling by providing irrigation and at 40 DAS water was drained from field.

The present field investigation resulted; highest plant height was recorded in KRL 99 while minimum in HD 2851. While less in tolerant varieties; KRL 3-4 and KRL 99 at 40 and 80 DAS. Water logging induced more reduction in tiller in susceptible variety HD 2009 followed by HD 2851 and very less reduction in tolerant varieties KRL 3-4 and KRL 99 at 40 and 80 DAS. The biomass plant-1 was more depleted in wheat susceptible varieties HD 2009 and HD 2851, while minimum in KRL 99 followed by KRL 3-4 at 40,80 DAS.

The present investigation was carried out with eighteen clones including four water logging tolerant checks at the Sugarcane Breeding Experimental Block of Norman Borlaug Crop Research Centre, Gobind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, India. Genetic variability was studied for thirteen different morphological and quality parameters viz., germination percent, number of tillers, number of millable canes, cane height, cane thickness, cane weight, cane yield, CCS yield, juice brix, sucrose %, purity %, CCS % and juice extraction percent.

Studies on genetic divergence in sugarcane plant and ratoon crops involving sixteen genotypes planted at RAU Pusa Farm, Samastipur, Bihar during 2012-13 and their consecutive ratoon during 2013-14 under low land area with water-stagnation 2 to 3 months to select profitable genotypes tolerant to water logging. Cane yield of plant crop was higher than the ratoon while for juice quality traits of ratoon crop showed better.
