Ebook "Cement and concrete chemistry" describes cement clinker formation. It covers multicomponent systems, clinker phase structures and their reactions with water, hydrate composition and structure, as well as their physical properties. The mineral additions to cement are described as are their influence on cement-paste properties. Special cements are also discussed.

Ebook "Modelling water flow in unsaturated porous media: Accounting for nonlinear permeability and material heterogeneity" focuses on two issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of flow in unsaturated porous media. In the first part numerical solution of the governing equations is discussed, with particular emphasis on the spatial discretization of highly nonlinear permeability coefficient. The second part deals with large scale flow in heterogeneous porous media of binary structure.

Fly ash is an active mineral admixture used commonly in the production of blended Portland cement. Fly ash improves many important properties of cement and cement concrete: increasing late compressive strength, increasing sulfate resistance, reducing heat of hydration, reducing alkali-silica reaction and reducing water permeability.

Terzaghi’s 1D consolidation theory is commonly used for evaluation of consolidation characteristics of soft soils. Several simplifying assumptions have been made to resolve differential equation for one-dimension consolidation. This paper presents a generalized theory for onedimensional consolidation of soft soil with variable compressibility and permeability.

Transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) derived parameters are used to direct fluid management in ICU-patients. Extravascular lung water EVLW and its ratio to pulmonary blood volume (pulmonary vascular permeability index PVPI) have been associated with mortality. In single indicator TPTD pulmonary blood volume (PBV) is estimated to be 25% of global end-diastolic volume (GEDV).

The visual observation and water permeability tests showed that bacterial mortar could repair the cracks and prevent the invasion of liquids and gases compared with the negative control. Besides, SEM and XRD analytical results indicated that the different carbonate polymorphs were formed inside the cracks. Additionally, the plate count method revealed that there were vegetative S. pasteurii cells in cracks even after 28 days, which means the bacterial mortar may have a long-lasting effect on the cement.

This study showed that the AV gel could be suitable for producing an edible film and coating with good physical characteristics such as low WVP (0.0037g/m2 .h.mmHg). AV's low WVP appeared to have a great impact on maintaining post-harvest quality especially reducing the percentage of weight loss of coated fruit during storage.

An efficient and inexpensive monolithic stationary phase (PHEMA-HA) has been prepared through an easy process comprising addition of humic acid (HA) to a mixture of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N,N’- methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm) and subsequent radical-polymerization at –20 ◦ C. The prepared monolithic material was characterized in terms of various techniques and methods such as elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimetry, hydrolytic stability tests, pHpzc measurements, water-holding capacity, and water permeability.

Hybrid paper sheets were prepared by applying a thin coating layer of cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and inorganic particles onto Whatman Grade 1 filter paper substrates. Several coatings with different inorganic particle contents and types were applied onto the paper substrates to investigate the effect of the variation in the coating formulation on the (i) wetting, (ii) water barrier properties, (iii) air barrier properties, (iv) surface roughness, and (v) mechanical properties of the samples.

The purpose of this study was to apply the modified Kostiakov method to determine the soil infiltration rate and permeated water amount of Thuong River alluvial soil for orange plantations in Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province, Vietnam. The soil particle size ranged from 0.02 to 2.00mm mainly found in the surface horizon (>77.7%). The soil was slightly acidic in the surface horizon, and highly acidic in the subsurface horizons (pHKCl from 3.42 to 4.79). The organic matter content of the surface horizon was mederate, while it was very low in the other horizons.

The soil cohesion and angle of internal friction depend greatly on the soil moisture. Specifically, soil with a lower moisture content has a higher shearing strength than that in soil with higher moisture content. The finite element modeling of moisture transfers in unsaturated soils through the relationship between soil moisture, soil suction, unsaturated permeability and soilmoisture dispersivity is capable of accurately predicting the wetting front development.
