  • Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is having enormous diversity in its taste, flavour and fruit form. Their taste and flavour were unique to particular region. The Western Ghats region of Karnataka is having large diversity of unique pickling type mango, called Appemidi (tender mango). Because of unscientific management and with rapid deforestation in several of these areas, an exploratory survey was conducted in Western Ghat regions of Chikmagalur to conserve these unique types and also to review the morphological traits.

  • Mango is one of the most important fruit crop of India due to its massive diversity in its flavour, aroma, taste and fruit form. Western Ghats region of Karnataka is having huge diversity of aromatic pickle mango called appemidi. The appemidi mango is used for pickling purpose because of its unique character like flavor, taste and good keeping quality. Number of appemidi trees is decreasing due unhealthy harvesting, de-forestation and hydroelectric projects. Exploratory survey was carried out in Western Ghats region of Belagavito conserve the genotypes.

  • Orchids are the most beautiful flowering, highly evolved ornamental plants and also have medicinal importance. In the present study, genetic diversity among six Dendrobium species was analysed using morphological characters and molecular markers including RAPD and SSR markers. Morphological characters analysed were leaf shoot and flower characters of six Dendrobium species. The variability in morphology was found among the species. Further, the genetic diversity among the species was determined by using RAPD and SSR markers.

  • The present study was carried out to quantify the changes in tree diversity and aboveground biomass in three different forest types existed in the Kodagu district of Central Western Ghats. Data on species richness, diversity, composition, above ground biomass (AGB) of trees, shrub and herbs, carbon stock were collected from 120 sample plots of 400 m 2 . Results revealed that evergreen forests recorded higher richness (141 species), diversity, density, basal area, biomass and carbon than other two forest types of the district. AGB from three forest types ranged from 175 to 233 Mg ha–1 .

  • The purpose of this study is to quantify the floristic diversity in forests and coffee agroforests and to know the effects of different landholding sizes in Kodagu district of India's the Western Ghats. We collected the data on trees, shrubs and herbs from 50 sample plots of 0.16 ha. each and analyzed for various diversity parameters. Results revealed Shannon’s (H') was highest in coffee agroforests (3.60) compared to that of natural forest (3.32). Conversely, Simpson’s (D) values did not differ between the land-use types.

  • Vanilla planifolia is popularly known as Prince of Spices a fleshy perennial liana grown in and around Western Ghats for its natural compounds used in several ice creams, chocolates and beverages. Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. vanillae is one of the most destructive pathogens causing severe loss to yield and during the survey conducted in 2016, maximum of 25 % incidence was noticed in coorg district. The pathogen was isolated and morphologically identified as F. oxysporum based on the conidial, chlamydosporial and cultural characters. The size of microconidia ranged between 5.97 to 8.

  • In view of the high level of morphological diversity in fern species, assessment of genetic variation among 19 fern species was evaluated using ten inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The results suggested that the ISSR markers produced much better reproducible bands and were more efficient in grouping fern species. ISSR fragments generated 29 to 87 bands per primer. A total of 281 polymorphic bands generated 34.48 to 66.66 per cent polymorphism per primer. All germplasm were clearly differentiated by their ISSR fingerprints.
