Wheat leaf rust
-
Wheat leaf rust is an important disease worldwide. Understanding the pathogenic molecular mechanism of Puccinia triticina Eriks. (Pt) and the inconstant toxic region is critical for managing the disease. The present study aimed to analyze the pathogenic divergence between Pt isolates.

The main diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Egypt, causing up to 50% of yield losses. Genetic resistance is the most economic and effective means of reducing yield losses caused by the disease. However, breeding genotypes for disease resistance is a continuous process and plant breeders need to add new effective sources to their breeding materials.

The objectives of this study was to determine the effectiveness of race non-specific and slow-rusting resistance in reducing losses in grain yield and to identify superior recombinants for yield and its component traits having both the genes when exposed to high leaf rust pressure.

Two highly effective genes for leaf rust resistance viz., Lr24, Lr28 were selected for pyramiding in the background of a susceptible but high yielding bread wheat variety DWR 162. The screening against most virulent pathotype of leaf rust 77-5 (121R63-1) indicated that both the genes confer a high degree of seedling resistance.

Present study aimed at molecular and phenotypic characterization of F3 population of a cross between leaf rust susceptible but well adapted bread wheat variety DWR 162 and resistant variety PBW 343 carrying highly effective alien genes Lr24 and Lr28 to identify recombinant lines with high productivity and leaf rust resistance. Fifty nine F3 lines with seven checks were evaluated for yield and yield contributing traits in randomized block design (RBD) with two replications.

Leaf and stripe rusts are two major wheat diseases, causing significant yield losses. The preferred way for protecting wheat from rust pathogens is by introgression of rust resistance traits from wheat-related wild species.

Wheat rusts (Leaf rust, Stem rust and Stripe rust) continue to pose a serious threat by inflicting losses in different parts of world. Leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks. is the most common rust disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and is widespread in India and posses a major threat to the wheat production of the country. Depending upon the severity and duration of infection, the losses may reach up to 50% of the yield. CIMMYT has developed a series of synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) by incorporating D genome donor Triticum tauschii in T. durum cultivars.

Wheat production in temperate area is significantly affected by rust diseases, among which stripe (or yellow) rust caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend f. sp. tritici and leaf (or brown) rust caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks. is major threat to production. Non-progenitor Aegilops species with substantial amount of variability for stripe rust resistance genes has been exploited to a limited extent.

Oats rank around sixth in world cereal production statistics, following wheat, maize, rice, barley and sorghum. In many parts of the world, oats are grown for use as grain as well as for forage and fodder, straw for bedding, hay, haylage, silage and chaff. Livestock grain feed is still the primary use of oat crops, accounting for an average of around 74 percent of the world’s total usage. In India, breeding of oats begun in nineteen-eighties and is grown as the most important cereal fodder crop in North Western, Central India, extending to the eastern regions.

A leaf rust resistant stock „Selection212‟ was assessed for resistance against array of leaf rust pathotypes and identified to be a source of resistance to all these pathotypes. The resistant stock Selection212including two susceptible checks Agra Local and Kharchia local were evaluated against 16 pathotypes of leaf rust, Puccinia triticina (Pt) pathogen.

Yellow (or stripe) and leaf (or brown) rusts, caused by Puccinia striiformis and P. triticina, respectively, are important diseases of wheat worldwide. Growing resistant cultivars is the most economical and environmentally safe control measure and has no cost to growers.

Puccinia triticina causes leaf rust in wheat and results in severe yield losses in mild wheat growing areas of Turkey: Thrace, Marmara, Mediterranean, and Çukurova. A feasible way to avoid any damage is to grow slow rusting cultivars.

Resistance to leaf rust contributed greatly to yield genetic gain. Turkish breeders made a substantial impact on national grain supply and food security. Future breeding strategies shall combine the utilization of CIMMYT germplasm, a diverse modern gene pool, and genetic resources in an integrated national breeding program.
