Yield in finger millet genotypes

The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the characters. Studies of genetic variability revealed high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean for the traits viz., number of basal tillers per plant, no. of productive tillers per plant, main ear width, grain yield per plant and grain yield per plot indicating simple selection can be practiced for improvement of these characters.

In the changing climate scenario, drought could be continued as a major abiotic limitation for crop productivity. Finger millet although known for its drought tolerance, the drought stress decreases the grain yield from 25 to 100 percent depending on the duration and magnitude of drought stress. Present study was conducted to explore the genetic variability of selected genotypes over the ruling varieties if any, based on the extent of reduction in grain yield, and dependent photosynthetic traits due to moderate drought stress for 18 to 20 days (grand growth to flower primordial initiation).

Field experiment was conducted during summer, 2018 to determine the influence of LAI on yield maximisation in finger millet genotypes by varying plant densities. Maximum grain yield was obtained at the plant density of 44.4 to 66.6 hills m-2 but above or below. The source size (LAI) and source activity (photosynthetic rate) were not the limitations for yield maximisation under optimal irrigation and; LAI of 6.5 to 7.0 was optimum for maximum finger millet yield especially in variety, GPU-28.

Finger millet or ragi is the primary food source for millions of people in tropical dry land regions of Africa and Asia. Two field experiments were conducted to study the genotypic variation for silicon accumulation and the effect of foliar applied silicic acid on growth, nutrient uptake and blast disease resistance of ragi. Study showed a significant varietal variation for Si accumulation with an average Si content of 1.67 % in the above ground part.

The experiment was deigned to evaluate the effect of nitrogen levels on crop growth, yield and quality of finger millet genotypes under rainfed ecosystem. The upland condition of experimental site having sandy loam soil in texture and acidic in reaction pH (5.30) with poor fertility organic carbon (0.30%), available nitrogen (182.2kg/ha) phosphorus (8.96 kg/ha) and potassium (92.70 kg/ha) representing major soil group of Jharkhand.

Fifteen genotypes of finger millet were evaluated in a field study to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield contributing traits. The analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among the entries for all the traits studied. A wide range of variation was recorded for plant height (cm), days 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of tillers per plant, number of fingers per year, length of finger (cm), test weight (g), yield per plant (g), straw yield per plant (g).

An experiment was undertaken by utilizing forty finger millet genotypes for eleven yield and yield contributing characters to assess genetic divergence. The analysis of variance has shown that there was significant variation among the genotypes in all the traits. The multivariate analysis carried out using Mahalanobis D2-statistics, indicated wider genetic diversity in the genotypes of finger millet.

The analysis of genetic diversity using D2 statistics clustered 33 selected genotypes of cultivated finger millet into ten different clusters. The cluster I had 8 genotypes and cluster II and IV had 9 genotypes each. The remaining clusters had only one genotype each. The inter cluster distance was highest (D=46.61) between cluster VII (GE4568) and cluster VIII (GE1200) and between cluster VII (GE4568) and cluster II (D=42.22). The trait days to 50 per cent flowering contributed more towards the genetic divergence of 33 selected finger millet genotypes.
