INTRODUCTION Stress is a global problem especially in the field of stress among the nurses is an endemic problem1. It contributes to health problems in nurses and decreases their efficiency. Occupational stress is of key interest to employers because of the known adverse effects on employee performance, productivity, job satisfaction and health as a whole 2. 2. A Preliminary Study on Health Care Professionals (Paramedical) Stress Due to Competition, Advancement of Technology & Environment at Chennai involves the relationships between individuals and their environment that are considered as challenging or exceeding their resources and jeopardizing their well-being. Stress reactions are responses in the form of physiological and psychological factor. Most people can cope with stress for short periods but chronic stress produces prolonged changes in the physiological state3. The issues of job stress, coping, and burnout among nurses are of universal concern to all managers and administrators in the area of health care4. Occupational stress is defined as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or to other types of demand placed upon them at work’.5 Symptoms include feeling upset, irritableness and behaving out of character, not being bothered about things one would be normally be concerned with, and social withdrawal.6 2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The impact of stress on performance provides the major reason for concern. Stressed providers tend to see patient complaints as trivial, make inaccurate diagnoses, and show significant deficits in relationship skills. Jeffrey S Hammer et al study reveals that the Para medical profession experiences a high degree of job-related stress relative to other medical personnel. In a component analysis of this stress the results show that job stress manifests itself as job dissatisfaction, organizational stress, and negative patient attitudes.7 Pines A et al study concludes occupational stress is an important problem in medical environments in which patients cycle through quickly and the frequency of successful treatment is high relative to chronic care treatment units.8 Jenner (2007) et al study clarifies that many paramedics do not have stressful reactions following exposure to potentially stressful incidents. This is due to individual differences such as personality, previous experiences, perceptions of stress and personal coping strategies.9 Stress is easily manageable if it is recognized at an early stage. So the interest of the study is to find out the level of stress among the paramedical professions. 3. PROBLEM STATEMENT In the recent years due the technology development in the health care field, the health care para medical professionals were under more occupational stress especially the nurses and the Lab technicians have to aware about the new innovations in their field and they must use in their day to day practice for the survival in the field and also for personality developments. Based on this, the present study implemented or getting responses from the nurses and lab technicians opinion and their stress planned. 4. OBJECTIVE To study whether the Paramedical professionals are stressed due to technology developments and Competition in the health care in Metropolitan city Chennai. 5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The study were carried out using purposive sampling technique and implemented a structured questionnaire In the present study includes, higher education, Technology Developments, Competition, Gender, Media, availability of Corporate Hospitals, Society are covered. In this study One hundred questionnaires used and 62 paramedical professionals have completed all the items of the questionnaire. http://www.iaeme.com/IJM/index.asp 372 editor@iaeme.com
  3. K. Asokan, G. Brindha and S. Valarmathi The Reliability of the questionnaire used was checked using Cronbach’salpha test and secured 0 .74 which is acceptable one. 6. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Totally 62 paramedical professionals were participated in the study. The Mean(SD) age of the Participant was 35(8.2) years and their experience was 9.9(5.7) years. Valarmathi Regehr et al’s (2002b) et al study discussed about of paramedics had a lack of transparency in the use of recruitment techniques10.In our study reveals 68% of the participants were not able to decided about the new technology in the paramedical Profession. Participants from several of the studies reviewed indicated that the family is a consistent and important source of support enabling paramedics to cope with stress11,12.In the current study also reveals 56.6% of participants were have strong family support and its useful to reduce their stress in their Profession. 7. CONCLUSION This preliminary study enables us to understand that the para medical professionals are Physically and Mentally stressed due to competition, experts especially metropolitan areas like Chennai. Also they have to compete the challenges and make a life-work balance. At the same time they also need to serve the society without any misperceptions. In this competitive era knowledge acquainting becomes the process and to update the developments in all aspects are indispensable to the health care professionals especially the paramedical professionals who are practicing in metropolitan areas like Chennai. Further study could be carried out by comparing with the inter para medical profession and medical profession to reduce the stress by intervening through integrated approaches and policy makings.
