Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
ARTHUR DOVE
Arthur Dove was an abstract nature painter whose work was radically different and
under appreciated in the American art scene.
In fact, Dove was the first American artist to paint in an entirely abstract manner. He
painted a set of six abstract works around 1910, prior to the European artist Wassily
Kandinsky’s famous abstract compositions. Kandinsky’s abstract work, however,
complemented the cultural context in Europe, and was therefore appreciated. Dove’s work had
no similar cultural context in America.
Overall, Dove’s abstract paintings did nothing to change American art. His work was
not once but twice orphaned: by the general indifference of the American public, and by his
own reclusive nature. Nevertheless, Dove’s abstract paintings remain interesting compositions
on nature.
Dove once wrote, “I would like to make something that is real in itself, or to be real
without looking like something else, that does not remind anyone of any other thing, and that
does not have to be explained, like the letter A for instance.”
A. Because there were too many abstract nature painters at the time
B. Because his paintings did nothing to change society
C. Because they did not have a cultural context in America
D. Because America was not interested in European painters
Question 38: According to the passage, which of the following is not true about Dove and
Kandinsky?
C. Dove wanted his art to remind people of other artists’ work.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Africa is home to some of the poorest nations in the world. Ironically, many of the
poorest nations in Africa hold some of the world’s greatest natural resources. Sierra Leone,
Liberia, Angola, and Congo are all rich in diamonds, but most of the citizens in these nations
live lives of poverty and fear. This is true because in each case, the nation’s wealth of natural
resources has helped to fuel conflicts which are both brutal and bloody. Both rebel groups and
the governments in these nations use the profits from diamond sales to buy weapons and supply
their armies, and the conflicts are now essentially fought over the control of the diamond trade.
In such a situation, the citizens of these nations are the victims. Not only are many innocent
people killed in the fighting, the conflict also prevents the country from developing. Schools
are destroyed and not rebuilt, and clean water and electricity are often lacking. Without such
basic services, disease and hunger spread throughout the country.
While the governments and the rebels who actually do the fighting hold much of the
responsibility for the suffering of their citizens, developed countries are also to blame. The
diamonds from these countries, often called conflict diamonds, are sold in jewelry shops across
Europe and the United States. The money from these diamond sales simply ensures that the
wars will continue. In an effort to stop this, the United Nations has passed agreements under
which advanced nations agree not to buy diamonds from conflict areas. This way, these terrible
wars will perhaps come to an end.
Question 43: Which of the following would be the best tile of the passage?
A. History of Africa
B. Natural resources
C. Conflict Diamonds
D. Governments and Rebels
Question 44: In stating that natural resources fuel conflict, the author means that natural
resources ___________
A. start arguments
B. support wars
C. add to suffering
D.
help
governments
Question 45: The phrase such basic services in the passage refers to services like ________
A. public education
B. energy and public health
C. the operation of diamond mines
D. supplying the army
Question 46: According to the passage, the diamond trade in some African countries is
important because ___________.
A. its sales are used to buy weapon
B. diamonds are the world’s natural resources
C. it prevents the conflicts between the countries
