The blood glucose test is ordered to measure the amount of glucose in the blood right at the time of sample collection. It is used to detect both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, to help diagnose diabetes, and to monitor glucose levels in persons with diabetes. Blood glucose may be measured on a fasting basis (collected after an 8 to 10 hour fast), randomly (anytime), post prandial (after a meal), and/or as part of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT / GTT). 1. Fasting blood glucose The blood glucose test is ordered to measure the amount of glucose in the blood right at the time of sample collection. It is used to detect both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, to help diagnose diabetes, and to monitor glucose leve ls in persons with diabetes. Blood glucose may be measured on a fasting basis (collected after an 8 to 10 hour fast), randomly (anytime), post prandial (after a meal), and/or as part of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT / GTT). To Prepare • Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight before the test (6h). This includes coffee, gum, candy and mints. • Do not smoke after midnight before the test. • If you are to take your medicines the morning of the test, take them with sips of water only. During the Test
  2. • A blood sample is taken with a needle from your arm. Normal Results Levels vary according to the laboratory, but in general up to 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) are considered normal. Persons with levels between 100 and 126 mg/dL may have impaired fasting glucose or prediabetes. These levels are considered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes and its complications. Diabetes is typically diagnosed when fasting blood glucose levels are 126 mg/dL or higher. Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results. What Abnormal Results Mean Greater than normal levels (hyperglycemia) may indicate: • Acromegaly (very rare) • Cushing syndrome (rare) • Diabetes mellitus • Impaired fasting glucose (also called "prediabetes") • Hyperthyroidism • Pancreatic cancer
  3. • Pancreatitis • Pheochromocytoma (very rare) • Too little insulin • Too much food Fasting Blood Glucose From 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) -> Normal fasting glucose From 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) -> Impaired fasting glucose (pre- diabetes) 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and above on more than one testing occasion -> Diabetes
