ABSTRACT
Morphological characterization of several qualitative traits and growth performance in Tre chicken from
Southern Vietnam
Morphological characterization of Tre chicken genetic resources is a prerequisite for conservation and their
rational utilization.
Data were collected from 182 chickens, which originated from 60 randomly selected smallholders in An Giang,
Dong Thap and Tien Giang Province, using questionnaires. The results indicated that several qualitative traits,
except for eye color trait, were significant differences among provinces. The normal feather distribution was high
at the value of 82.26%. The main plumage colors were found to be yellow, red, white and silver-penciled, which
were 15.93, 19.78, 18.68 and 25.82%, respectively. Tre chicken with yellow shanks was high at the value of
69.23%. The square shank is one of the characteristics for farmers to distinguish Tre chicken in Southern
Vietnam. The highest percentage of this trait was found at the value of 67.05% in An Giang Province. In
addition, the highest percentage of ear-lobe color was red-white at the value of 53.96%. There was a high
correlation between several quantitative traits, which was reflected that selection of a specific trait will probably
improve other traits. The high correlations were found between body weight and body length, body weight and
circumference chest, and between shank length and wing length (Spearman's rank correlation = 0.80, 0.85 and
0.84, respectively, P
